Book Robert Triffin

Download or read book Robert Triffin written by Ivo Maes and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides an intellectual biography of Robert Triffin. Triffin (1911-1993) played a key role in the international monetary debates in the postwar period. He became famous with trenchant analyses of the vulnerabilities of the international monetary system (the Triffin dilemma), predicting the end of the Bretton Woods system. Triffin was a child of the interwar period, marked by the Great Depression and the rise of fascism. He became not only an eminent academic but also an influential policy advisor. In the mid-1940s he worked at the Federal Reserve, participating in several monetary reform missions in Latin America. Thereafter, Triffin played an important role in the creation of the European Payments Union. In his later academic life, Triffin put forward proposals for reforming the international monetary system. But because he doubted that they would come to fruition, he also developed plans for regional monetary integration, particularly in Europe, where he became the monetary advisor of Jean Monnet. With proposals for a European Reserve Fund and a European currency unit, he became one of the intellectual fathers of Europe's monetary union. Throughout his life Triffin remained faithful to the ideals of his youth. The young Triffin was indignant about the Versailles Treaty, while the old Triffin fulminated against the Vietnam war. For him, economics was a way to contribute to a better world. He was strongly attached to his independence and the pursuit of a better and more peaceful world. He was a monk in economists' clothing"--

Book Nine Lives of Neoliberalism

Download or read book Nine Lives of Neoliberalism written by Dieter Plehwe and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism is dead. Again. After the election of Trump and the victory of Brexit in 2016, many diagnosed the demise of the ideology of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Augusto Pinochet, and the WTO. Yet the philosophy of the free market and the strong state has an uncanny capacity to survive and even thrive in crisis. Understanding neoliberalism's longevity and its latest permutation requires a more detailed understanding of its origins and its varieties. This volume breaks with the caricature of neoliberalism as a simple belief in market fundamentalism and homo economicus to show how neoliberal thinkers perceived institutions from the family to the university, disagreed over issues from intellectual property rights and human behavior to social complexity and monetary order, and sought to win consent for their project through the creation of new honors, disciples, and networks. Far from a monolith, neoliberal thought is fractured and, occasionally, even at war with itself. We can begin by making sense of neoliberalism's nine lives by sorting out its own tangled histories.

Book Monetary Reform and the Bellagio Group

Download or read book Monetary Reform and the Bellagio Group written by Carol M. Connell and published by Pickering & Chatto Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 2681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bellagio Group was founded by Fritz Machlup, William Fellner and Robert Triffin at a time of global economic crisis not unlike the one we face today. With its original network of thirty-two economists, it was the forerunner of the current Group of Thirty. The Bellagio Group comprised academics, policy makers, bankers and corporate leaders, who worked together with the aim of economic reform. Machlup, Fellner and Triffin led the Group in their attempts to identify the connecting principles between geopolitical, currency, business and social issues facing economies in the aftermath of the Second World War. Between 1964 and 1977 the Bellagio Group were instrumental in bringing together academics with leaders from the public and private sectors in a series of influential conferences. These meetings involved the most important economists in the world and focused on banking practices, as well as mechanisms to increase economic growth. This collection brings together the private correspondence and published papers of the Bellagio Group’s founders to create a vivid picture of the personalities, issues, debates and compromises that led to the adoption of flexible exchange rates and a modified Triffin plan. The first three volumes are each devoted to the letters and unpublished papers of Machlup, Triffin and Fellner. The final two volumes focus on the conferences and publications of the Bellagio Group founders.

Book excerpt: This book describes the history of the IMF from its birth, through the Bretton Woods era, and in the aftermath. Special attention is paid to integrating IMF history with the macro-economic policies of member countries and of other international institutions as well. This collection of work presents a clear understanding, inter alia, of the influence of the United States over IMF policy via the National Advisory Committee; the dealings of the IMF with the UK on pound sterling policy; the institutional change of the IMF brought about by Per Jacobsson, the third managing director; and France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan vis-à-vis IMF consultations. It also provides the reader with topics concerning the bankers’ acceptance market function and international liquidity issues in relation to IMF policy; the final chapter sheds light on the long-standing relations between the IMF and China, from the Bretton Woods Agreement to the contemporary period. All the chapters are archive-based academic studies providing deep insights with historical background, which makes this book the first thoroughly independent achievement in the field of IMF history. This book is highly recommended to readers interested in contemporary monetary and financial history and those who seek to obtain a coherent image of postwar international institutions and markets.
