Book excerpt: This oversized book of photography and verse reflects many aspects of the highly emotional, uncommonly eventful life of the author: the confusion and poverty he experienced as a child growing up in Fort Scott, Kansas; the bigotry, drug addiction, terror, chaos and blatant inhumanity to which he was exposed as a rising journalist and photographer; the beauty and sophistication with which his professional career is associated today.

Book The Patristic Understanding of Creation

Download or read book The Patristic Understanding of Creation written by William A. Dembski and published by Influence Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Patristic Understanding of Creation encapsulates what the Church Fathers had to say, in their own words, on the topic of creation. Going back to Roman and Byzantine times, the writings of the Church Fathers are basic to Christian theology and provide a benchmark for how Christians have traditionally understood creation. This understanding of creation, however, faces tremendous challenges in our day, especially in discussions at the intersection of science and religion. Process theology and other efforts to reconceptualize creation have explicitly opposed key elements of the Christian doctrine of creation: creation ex nihilo, the transcendence and immanence of God in creation, “the absolute creatureliness and non-self-sufficiency of the world" (to use a phrase of Fr. Georges Florovsky), the goodness of creation, and the openness of the world to divine action. All of these the Church Fathers not only held but also ably defended. This anthology is therefore not merely of academic or historical interest. In reasserting a theologically sound understanding of creation, this anthology fills a need that is both practical and urgent.

Book The Documentary Film Book

Download or read book The Documentary Film Book written by Brian Winston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powerfully posing questions of ethics, ideology, authorship and form, documentary film has never been more popular than it is today. Edited by one of the leading British authorities in the field, The Documentary Film Book is an essential guide to current thinking on documentary film. In a series of fascinating essays, key international experts discuss the theory of documentary, outline current understandings of its history (from pre-Flaherty to the post-Griersonian world of digital 'i-Docs'), survey documentary production (from Africa to Europe, and from the Americas to Asia), consider documentaries by marginalised minority communities, and assess its contribution to other disciplines and arts. Brought together here in one volume, these scholars offer compelling evidence as to why, over the last few decades, documentary has come to the centre of screen studies.

Download or read book Poetry in Speech written by Egbert J. Bakker and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying linguistic theory to the study of Homeric style, Egbert J. Bakker offers a highly innovative approach to oral poetry, particularly the poetry of Homer. By situating formulas and other features of oral style within the wider contexts of spoken language and communication, he moves the study of oral poetry beyond the landmark work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. One of the book's central features, related to the research of the linguist Wallace Chafe, is Bakker's conception of spoken discourse as a sequence of short speech units reflecting the flow of speech through the consciousness of the speaker. Bakker shows that such short speech units are present in Homeric poetry, with significant consequences for Homeric metrics and poetics. Considering Homeric discourse as a speech process rather than as the finished product associated with written discourse, Bakker's book offers a new perspective on Homer as well as on other archaic Greek texts. Here Homeric discourse appears as speech in its own right, and is freed, Bakker suggests, from the bias of modern writing style which too easily views Homeric discourse as archaic, implicitly taking the style of classical period texts as the norm. Bakker's perspective reaches beyond syntax and stylistics into the very heart of Homeric—and, ultimately, oral—poetics, altering the status of key features such as meter and formula, rethinking their relevance to the performance of Homeric poetry, and leading to surprising insights into the relation between "speech" and "text" in the encounter of the Homeric tradition with writing.

They had moved away from his grandparents, one of the only places where he felt safe. Now he is in high school and was struggling to get through. Unable make friends and succeed in anything he tried to do, he had reached a point where he hated being alive. Then he met Cherrie. She was different and didn't treat him like all the other students at school. He enjoyed being around her and even attended church activities with her. He had finally felt like maybe things would get better. Terry and Clay are partners on an ambulance. Clay is a new EMT and has a lot of questions. Terry is very willing to answer them and assist Clay in any way possible, whether that be EMS or life in general. What neither of them anticipate is the way both of their lives are about to change, forever. "Fantastic. This book incorporates past memories and current reality well. I was unable to put it down once I started." Bill L. - College Professor Troy lives in Colorado with his wife, two sons, and one foster son. He has been involved in youth ministry since 1985 and been a paramedic since 2000. He currently teaches EMS full-time as well as works part-time as a paramedic with both a ground and a flight transporting agencies. Troy's heart is always open to the people he comes in contact with, whether that is in an emergency situation, students, friends or co-workers in need of spiritual help; or a fellow church member that is looking for guidance.
