Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycology, the study of fungi, originated as a subdiscipline of botany and was a descriptive discipline, largely neglected as an experimental science until the early years of this century. A seminal paper by Blakeslee in 1904 provided evidence for self incompatibility, termed "heterothallism", and stimulated interest in studies related to the control of sexual reproduction in fungi by mating-type specificities. Soon to follow was the demonstration that sexually reproducing fungi exhibit Mendelian inheritance and that it was possible to conduct formal genetic analysis with fungi. The names Burgeff, Kniep and Lindegren are all associated with this early period of fungal genetics research. These studies and the discovery of penicillin by Fleming, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1945, provided further impetus for experimental research with fungi. Thus began a period of interest in mutation induction and analysis of mutants for bio chemical traits. Such fundamental research, conducted largely with Neurospora crassa, led to the one gene: one enzyme hypothesis and to a second Nobel Prize for fungal research awarded to Beadle and Tatum in 1958. Fundamental research in biochemical genetics was extended to other fungi, especially to Saccharomyces cere visiae, and by the mid-1960s fungal systems were much favored for studies in eukaryotic molecular biology and were soon able to compete with bacterial systems in the molecular arena.

Book Plant Nutrition Molecular Biology and Genetics

Download or read book Plant Nutrition Molecular Biology and Genetics written by G. Gissel-Nielsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixth International Symposium on Genetics and Molecular Biology of Plant Nutriti9n was held in Elsinore, Denmark from August 17-21, 1998 and organised by th RiS0 National Laboratory in the year of its 40 anniversary. The 98 participants represented 23 countries and 80 scientific contributions with 43 oral and 37 poster presentations. The symposium addressed the molecular mechanisms, physiology and genetic regulation of plant nutrition. The Symposium brought together scientists from a range of different disciplines to exchange information and ideas on the molecular biology of mineral nutrition of plants. The symposium emphasised: • Bridging the gab between molecular biology, applied genetics, plant nutrition and plant breeding. • The development of methodologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of nutrition of plants • Quality of plant products. With sessions on: Nitrogen; Phosphorous; Micronutrients; Symbiosis; Membranes; Stress; Heavy Metals and Plant Breeding. In comparison with the previous conferences in this series more emphasis was placed on use of molecular techniques to clarify physiological mechanisms and processes, gene expression and regulation, as well as genetic marker assisted analysis. Significant of molecular genetic markers and other progress was reported in exploitation biotechnologies in breeding programmes.

Book Genes for Plant Abiotic Stress

Download or read book Genes for Plant Abiotic Stress written by Matthew A. Jenks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abiotic stresses caused by drought, salinity, toxic metals, temperature extremes, and nutrient poor soils are among the major constraints to plant growth and crop production worldwide. While crop breeding strategies to improve yields have progressed, a better understanding of the genetic and biological mechanisms underpinning stress adaptation is needed. Genes For Plant Abiotic Stress presents the latest research on recently examined genes and alleles and guides discussion of the genetic and physiological determinants that will be important for crop improvement in the future.

Book Yeast Membrane Transport

Download or read book Yeast Membrane Transport written by José Ramos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume reviews the recent progress in our understanding of membrane transport in yeast including both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and non-conventional yeasts. The articles provide a summary of the key transport processes and put these in a systems biology context of cellular regulation, signal reception and homeostasis. After a general introduction, readers will find review articles covering the mechanisms and regulation of transport for various substrates ranging from diverse nutrients to cations, water and protons. These articles are complemented by a chapter on extremophilic yeast, a chapter on the mathematical modelling of ion transport and two chapters on the role of transport in pathogenic yeasts and antifungal drug resistance. Each article provides both a general overview of the main transport characteristics of a specific substrate or group of substrates and the unique details that only an expert working in the field is able to transmit to the reader. Researchers and students of the topic will find this book to be a useful resource for membrane transport in yeast collecting information in one complete volume, which is otherwise scattered across many papers. This might also be interesting for scientists investigating other species in order to compare transport mechanisms with known functions in yeast with the cells on which they work.
