Book excerpt: John Ruskin was the most influential art critic during the Victorian period. His five volume book Modern Painters was written in opposition against art critics who were opposed to the paintings of J.M.W. Turner. Ruskin was a collector of Turner's works and the two were friends. In his writings, Ruskin was a harsh critic towards classical art, and believe that the landscape paintings of Turner and others demonstrated a superior understanding of "truth."

Book The Practice of Tempera Painting

Download or read book The Practice of Tempera Painting written by Daniel V. Thompson and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tempera painting, the method in which colors are mixed with some binding material other than oil (primarily egg yolk), is the earliest type of painting known to man. The wall paintings of ancient Egypt and Babylon are tempera, as are many of the paintings of Giotto, Lippi, Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Tintoretto, and many other masters. But in spite of the time-proven excellence of this technique — which boasts many clear advantages over oil paint — it does not receive the degree of attention from modern painters that it deserves. Part of the explanation for this neglect, surely, is the absence of sufficient information about the materials and procedures involved in tempera painting. The present volume, in fact, is virtually the only complete, authoritative, step-by-step treatment of the subject in the English language, D.V. Thompson wrote this book after an exhaustive study, over many years, of countless medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the British Museum and elsewhere, and is unquestionably the world's leading authority on tempera materials and processes. Beginning with an introductory chapter on the uses and limitations of tempera, the author covers such topics as the choice of material for the panel; propensities of various woods; preparing the panel for gilding; making the gesso mixture; methods of applying the gesso; planning the design of a tempera painting; use of tinted papers; application of metals to the panel; tools for gliding; handling and laying gold; combination gold and silver leafing; pigments and brushes; choice of palette; mixing the tempera; tempering and handling the colors; techniques of the actual painting; mordant gilding; permanence of tempera painting; varnishing; and artificial emulsion painting. The drawings and diagrams, illustrating the various materials and techniques, infinitely increase the clarity of the discussions. As a careful exposition of all aspects of authentic tempera painting, including many of the possible modern uses for this ancient method, this book actually stands alone. No one who is interested in tempera painting as a serious pursuit can afford to be without it.

Not illustrated. 1862 edition. Excerpt: ...is sufficient to observe the law in a single example, such as Fig. 49, which is a wing of one of the angels in Durer's woodcut of the Fall of Lucifer. At first sight, the plumes seem disposed with much irregularity, but there is a sense of power and motion in the whole which the reader would find was at once lost by a careless copyist; for it depends on the fact that if we take the principal curves at any points of the wing, and continue them in the lines which they are pursuing at the moment they terminate, these continued lines will all meet in a single point, c. It is this law which gives unity to the wing. All groups of curves set beside each other depend for their beauty upon the observance of this law;f and if, therefore, the mountain crests are to be perfectly beautiful, Nature must contrive t(. get this element of radiant curvature into them in one way or anouier. Nor does it, at first sight, appear easy for her to get, I do not say The lines are a little too straight in their continuations, the engraver having cut some of the curvature out of their thickness, thinking I had drawn them too coarsely. But I have chosen this coarsely lined example, and others like it, following, because I wish to accustom the reader to distinguish between the mere fineness of instrument in the artist's hand, and the precision of the line he draws. Give Titian a blunt pen, and still Titian's line will be a noble one: a tyro, with a pen well mended, may draw more neatly; but his lines ought to be discerned from Titian's, if we understand drawing. Every line in this woodcut of Durer's is refined; and that in the noblest sense. Whether broad or fine does not matter, the lines are right; and the most delicate false line is evermore to be despised, in...

Book Changing Images of Pictorial Space

Download or read book Changing Images of Pictorial Space written by William V. Dunning and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1991-03-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No artist, critic, or art historian disputes the importance of recording how and why our conceptions and methods of depicting pictorial space have changed from ancient to modern times, and yet no previous book has provided a comprehensive history centered around these changing images of pictorial space and the ways in which their evolution reflects ideological changes in society. Dunning traces the two thousand year evolution of the conception and the depiction of space in European (primarily Italian and French) and American painting. Unraveling one illusory image after another into their particular elements, he explains the development of new styles and images in painting as a continuous rearrangement of these basic elements. Following this progression through the Greco-Roman period, the Italian Renaissance, impressionism, and the end of modern art, the author concludes with today's postmodern concentration on linguistic aspects in painting, a change from the former emphasis on space and illusion. Changing Images of Pictorial Space, with over forty illustrations, will be of interest to a wide audience—from art historians, painters, and art educators to general readers who wish to understand more about one of the central organizing principles in all schools and periods of art.
