Translate it and read works, and we see that it is a meaningless term in all else than that it is something created. Download or read book Modern Music Vol 2 written by Wayne D. Shirley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Music, Vol. 2: January-April, 1925 Much Of this is the result Of our own complacency. The sonor ities Of Spanish music have not accorded with the aesthetic theories which we accepted from our Teutonic teachers as absolute; so we dismissed them as crudities unworthy Of further investigation. But Spanish musicians have not been blameless. Neglecting or repudiating the rich natural home product, their own folk-lore, they have followed foreign fashions; but since these neither admit of real assimilation by the Spanish temperament, nor yet Of the convincing expression of Spanish impulses, the result has been an uninteresting hybrid, in which the two strains stultify the powers Of each other. Meanwhile, the folk-music, forbidden the higher Circles, has perforce remained a feature Of the life of the common populace, eventually being driven for shelter into the public fairs, the thea ters and the cafes of the towns. Here it has gradually degen crated, being modified in the larger towns to gratify the taste Of foreigners seeking local color of a previsioned kind. Thus all its finer qualities have been adulterated by weak sentiment, and the result, further weakened by foreign mutations, provides the sickly effusions which constitute our Spanish dance-hall vogues. But in the rural districts and the more isolated towns Of the prov inces the traditional art has maintained its Vigor and developed local forms redolent Of the races and physical atmospheres of the varied divisions Of Spain. Thus the national music Of Spain is not to be summed up in a few general types Of song or dance. Its varieties are many and as strongly contrasted as the unrelated races, - Iberian, Catalonian and Andalusian, - from which they emanate. Above all, it is utterly false to label Spanish music as consistently sentimental, languorous or even voluptuous. It has a wide range of feeling, even as the literature, architecture and painting of the country, comprising fiery passion, broad merriment, harsh vigor and cool intellectual grace: it is a true expression Of the mingled elements which go to make up the nation. And its aesthetics, albeit radical ly different from that of European convention, have as sound a basis and as continuous a traditional evolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Music and Musicians, Vol. 2 The preparation of two volumes of critical and biographical sketches, including the masters of music from the earliest per-classical epoch do it in such a way as to hold the interest of the casual reader and command the respect of the musical enthusiast is doubly difficult. Yet it is hoped that this purpose has here been achieved. A particularly unique feature is the inclusion of many monographs on celebrated composers that are the literary product of other equally celebrated composers, critics and specialists. As a composer, Saint-Saens is known the world over; and yet many may be surprised to realize that as a critic and musical litterateur he is one of the foremost in France. A monograph on Franz Liszt from the pen of Saint-Saens becomes, then, a rare moment in musical literature, and one which should find a permanent place in the library of every music lover, Edvard Grieg, writing upon Schumann and Mozart, affords not only a view of two composers through the intimate understanding of another composer, but at the same time offers a rare opportunity for a reverse analysis of a composer who for the moment has turned critic, - a view which in his particular case is perhaps possible through no other surviving medium of self-revealment. These volumes are replete with any number of similar examples, wherein composers, who for the most part have expressed their inmost thoughts only in musical writings, employ the language of written speech for an intimate delineation such as would hardly be possible to the average critical writer on music, at the same time laying bare their own mental processes to a degree that is impossible in any other way. "Oh, that mine enemy would write a book," was the cry of one who realized with what fidelity the pen of the writer mirrors his own inner conscience, while ostensibly analyzing for the reader some wholly detached character or series of events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern German Music, Vol. 2 of 2: Recollections and Criticisms The above is a solid, if not a very genial, tribute to Hummel the pianist; but I must think, that from philosophers so far-sighted, and from musicians so catholic, he still might have claimed fairer construction and kinder allowance. Though he had not beautiful Polish eyes, he was still a notable composer; though he was like a vessel of the worst material, he had more than the mere Pandora's gift of interpreta tion he commanded the individual force, fire - most of all, fancy - of a poet capable of ex tempore utterance. Book The Music of the Modern World Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Music of the Modern World Vol 1 of 2 written by Fanny Morris Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Music of the Modern World, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated in the Lives and Works of the Greatest Modern Musicians and in Reproductions of Famous Paintings, Etc Scheffer, Eugene Delacroix, and Paul Delaroche, members of circles where music held a supreme interest. Music is SO nearly allied to painting and sculpture that a picture is Often a better guide to the meaning of a piece than any words - even words Of poetry. The pictorial suggestions Offered in our music pages are only suggestions, but as such may prove stimulating to the imagination of the pianist and singer, especially when they express motion or grace in repose. They Should not be taken too seriously. It is hardly necessary to add that the music OF the modern world is in no sense an encyclopaedia. Quite as many great artists are unmentioned in its pages as find a place there, quite as many very great composers remain unquoted as are repre sented in its music pages. In the case Of Wagner and Berlioz, the narrow excerpt of a melody, or a Short transcription from works so massive, grand, and full of detail, affords no example Of the genius or style Of those immense contours, whereas the tuneful num bers of Rossini, Gounod, or even Meyerbeer are easily separated from their original environment because they are complete in themselves. Much of the music selected is cameo-like in its dimensions and finish, because only cameos could be contained in SO small a compass as the number of pages at our disposal. The editors have collected a group of melodies that will never become Old while civilization endures. Those culled from Russia, Bohemia, and Hungary are as yet scarcely known in America; they will sur prise as much by their congeniality to American temperament as by their exquisite fresh ness. The illustrations of Hunyady Laszlo, by Pennell, are the fruit Of a season's wan dering in Hungary in search of gipsy music. It is needless to say that the author of the great national opera Of Hungary was not a gipsy, and that the patriotic themes that form the context Of the opera are of the purest Hungarian character. Special acknowledgments are due to Gunther co. For the care with which they have type-set the piano music. We believe that such feats as the pedal phrasing in Vogel als Prophet have never before been accomplished with music type. Book The American Musical Landscape

Download or read book The American Musical Landscape written by Richard Crawford and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book reflects a breakthrough in American music studies, an unrecognized field among traditional musicologists until the past few decades, during which enormous progress has been made in documenting three centuries of American musical activities and figures. Time and effort had to be expended exclusively on the development of basic historical studies. The time has come for a new phase, one that can take a creative, interpretive approach. Professor Crawford's study will introduce this higher level of scholarship into the field of American music studies."—Vivian Perlis, author of Charles Ives Remembered "A major statement by a senior scholar on what American musicology is all about. . . These themes are also topical; they come at a time when much more research is being done in American music, but little thought is being given to the big picture, the vision, the philosophy, and the implications of historical research. Now is the time for a synthesis, and there are few scholars better equipped to do that in American music than Richard Crawford."—Michael Broyles, author of Music of the Highest Class
