Book excerpt: To be useful for communication language must be grounded in perceptions of the world, but acquiring such grounded language is a challenging task that increases in difficulty as the length and syntactic complexity of utterances grow. Several state of the art methods exist to learn complex grounded language from unannotated utterances, however each requires that the semantic system of the language be completely defined ahead of time. This expectation is problematic as it assumes not only that agents must have complete semantic understanding before starting to learn language, but also that the human designers of these systems can accurately transcribe the semantics of human languages in great detail. This paper presents Reagent, a construction grammar framework for concurrently learning the syntax and semantics of complex English referring expressions, with an emphasis on spatial referring expressions. Rather than requiring fully predefined semantic representations, Reagent only requires access to a set of semantic primitives from which it can build appropriate representations. The results presented here demonstrate that Reagent can acquire constructions that are missing from its starting grammar by observing the contextual utterances of a fully fluent agent, can approach fluent accuracy at inferring the referent of such expressions, and learns meanings that are qualitatively similar to the constructions of the agent from which it is learning. We propose that this approach could be expanded to other types of expressions and languages, and forms a solid foundation for general natural language acquisition.

An important research endeavor which the present study undertakes is an examination of whether the meaning of the preposition over is in fact complex enough for the preposition to be treated as a lexical unit rather than merely a functional one. In order to achieve that goal, the gathered linguistic material is analyzed first and foremost in terms of its semantic content; that is, the geometric relations between the trajector and landmark, and the functional consequences of such relations. The research into the morphology of prepositions reveals a considerable area of overlap between prepositions and adverbs, adverbial particles, and prefixes, as well as nouns, verbs and adjectives. The discussion of the syntax of prepositions is illustrated with labeled tree diagrams of selected sentences to show how the preposition over and the prepositional phrases it heads are embedded in larger structures of the English sentence. An important finding of the present study is the confirmation that the spatial preposition over encodes a broad range of geometrical and functional relations, as well as rich grammatical information. This book will be of interest to students and researchers interested in semantic and conceptual aspects of prepositions, meaning construction, human cognition, and management of space.

Book excerpt: This striking study of the meaning and use of the major spatial prepositions in French provides valuable insight into how the human mind organizes spatial relationships. Most previous analyses of spatial prepositions have assumed that their semantic properties can be adequately explained by familiar logical and geometrical concepts. Thus, the standard view of the preposition "in" as it appears in the sentence "the ball is in the bag" postulates that it refers to the geometrical relation of inclusion. This paradigm, however, falters when faced with the contrast in acceptability between sentences such as "the bulb is in the socket" and "the bottle is in the cap." The force exerted by the "landmark" (a conceptually fixed object) on the "target" (a moveable object) is crucial in this difference: the functional notion of containment seems more operational in the use of the preposition "in" than inclusion. That is, what are taken to be the landmark and the target depend greatly on the functions these objects serve in the human scheme. This offers important clues to otherwise problematic linguistic quirks, such as why one sleeps in one's bed, while one is said to lie on one's deathbed. While many of the examples apply in English as well as French, there are some noteworthy differences—in French one sits on a chair, but in a couch. Vandeloise convincingly argues that it is precisely this subjective element which makes a standard geometrical account unfeasible.
