Book Modelling Seabed Disturbance and Sediment Mobility on the Canadian Atlantic Shelf

Download or read book Modelling Seabed Disturbance and Sediment Mobility on the Canadian Atlantic Shelf written by Michael Z. Li and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ocean surface waves and tidal currents can interact to produce strong seabed shear stress and mobilization of sediments that can significantly impact the seabed stability and benthic habitats on continental shelves. Therefore the knowledge of the magnitude and frequency of seabed disturbance by waves and currents and the resulting mobilisation of sediment on continental shelves is critical for the spatial planning and management of Canada's offshore lands. Modelled waves, tidal current and circulation current data for a 3-year period were used in a combined-flow sediment transport model to simulate the seabed shear stresses and the mobilization of observed sediment grain size on the Canadian Atlantic Shelf. The modelling results are presented and analyzed to derive updated framework of seabed disturbance and sediment mobility on the Atlantic Shelf"--Summary, page 1.

Book Modelling Seabed Disturbance and Sediment Mobility for the Scotian Shelf Bioregion Offshore Nova Scotia

Download or read book Modelling Seabed Disturbance and Sediment Mobility for the Scotian Shelf Bioregion Offshore Nova Scotia written by Michael Z. Li and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ocean surface waves and currents can interact to produce strong seabed shear stress and mobilization of sediments that can significantly impact the seabed stability and benthic habitats on continental shelves. Therefore the knowledge of the magnitude and frequency of seabed disturbance by waves and currents and the resulting mobilization of sediment on continental shelves is critical for the spatial planning and management of Canada's offshore lands. Modelled waves, near-bottom tidal current and circulation current data for a 3-year period were used in a widely applied sediment transport module to simulate the seabed shear stresses and the mobilization of observed sediment grain size for the Scotian Shelf bioregion. The modelling results are presented and analyzed to derive updated understanding of seabed disturbance and sediment mobility on the Scotian Shelf"--Summary, page 1.

Book Continental Shelves of the World

Download or read book Continental Shelves of the World written by F.L. Chiocci and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's continental shelves are the sites of vast resources of food, energy and minerals, the exploitation of which is continuously increasing. Fluctuating global sea levels throughout the Quaternary period produced multiple transgressive and regressive cycles that profoundly affected and shaped these shelves. The complex interactions among climate, sea level, tectonics, oceanography and sediment input have formed distinctive sediment packages on each shelf and provide a guide to the interpretation of older shelf sequences throughout the geological record. This Memoir compiles studies on 23 selected shelves from all the continents, focusing on their evolution and examining the patterns of sedimentation during the past approximately 125 000 years. In addition to providing basic background information for each area, the chapters consider specific aspects of continental shelf research, from seismic stratigraphy to geomorphology, from palaeoceanography to palaeo sea-level reconstruction and from palaeontology to geochemistry.

Book Sediments Morphology and Sedimentary Processes on Continental Shelves

Download or read book Sediments Morphology and Sedimentary Processes on Continental Shelves written by Michael Z. Li and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of multibeam and sediment transport measurement technologies and the adoption of multi-faceted research methodologies have greatly advanced our understanding of the sedimentary processes on continental shelves in the last decade. This book uniquely blends cutting-edge research and state-of-the art review articles that take stock of new advances in multibeam mapping and sediment transport technologies, spatial analysis and modelling, and the applications of these advances to the understanding of shelf sediments, morphodynamics, and sedimentary processes. Case studies are also presented to illustrate the utilization of seabed property and process knowledge in habitat mapping and ocean management With its mix of papers focusing on technological advances, integration of shelf morphology and processes, and the application of these advances to coastal and ocean management, this Special Publication volume will serve as a milestone reference for professional marine scientists and as advanced text for students in marine geology, sedimentology and oceanography. This book is part of the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) Special Publications. The Special Publications from the IAS are a set of thematic volumes edited by specialists on subjects of central interest to sedimentologists. Papers are reviewed and printed to the same high standards as those published in the journal Sedimentology and several of these volumes have become standard works of reference.

Book Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat

Download or read book Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat written by Peter Harris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat: GeoHab Atlas of Seafloor Geomorphic Features and Benthic Habitats, Second Edition, provides an updated synthesis of seabed geomorphology and benthic habitats. This new edition includes new case studies from all geographic areas and habitats that were not included in the previous edition, including the Arctic, Asia, Africa and South America. Using multibeam sonar, the benthic ecology of submarine features, such as fjords, sand banks, coral reefs, seamounts, canyons, mud volcanoes and spreading ridges is revealed in unprecedented detail. This timely release offers new understanding for researchers in Marine Biodiversity, environmental managers, ecologists, and more. - Explores the relationships between seabed geomorphology, oceanography and biology - Provides global case studies which directly focus on habitats, including both biological and physical data - Describes ways to detect change in the marine environment (change in the condition of benthic habitats), a critical aspect for judging the performance of policies and legislation

Book Rhodolith Ma rl Beds A Global Perspective

Download or read book Rhodolith Ma rl Beds A Global Perspective written by Rafael Riosmena-Rodríguez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhodolith beds are recognized internationally as a unique ecosystem, and they are the focus of this interdisciplinary book. These marine beds occur worldwide, from the tropics to the poles, ranging in depth from intertidal to deep subtidal habitats and they are also represented in extensive fossil deposits. In the light of international interest in rhodoliths and maerl concerning their role in coastal ecosystems and with respect to biodiversity, fisheries, and the production of sediment, this book provides the most comprehensive view possible. As readers will discover, rhodoliths/maerl are fundamental to a range of ecological processes, acting as ecosystem engineers including playing key roles in recruitment and providing nursery habitats. Rhodoliths/maerl have been used commercially in some parts of the world, and they are understood to be vulnerable to coastal modifications and human-induced change, and hence their status may serve as an indicator of ecosystem health. Rhodoliths/maerl contribute to global carbon budgets although the extent remains to be evaluated, as do the potential impacts of changing global climates and ocean acidification.
