Book Rupture and Reconstruction

Download or read book Rupture and Reconstruction written by Haym Soloveitchik and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essay that forms the core of this book is an attempt to understand the developments that have occurred in Orthodox Jewry in America in the last seventy years, and to analyse their implications. The prime change is what is often described as ‘the swing to the right’, a marked increase in ritual stringency, a rupture in patterns of behaviour that has had major consequences not only for Jewish society but also for the nature of Jewish spirituality. For Haym Soloveitchik, the key feature at the root of this change is that, as a result of migration to the ‘New Worlds’ of England, the US, and Israel and acculturation to its new surroundings, American Jewry—indeed, much of the Jewish world— had to reconstruct religious practice from normative texts: observance could no longer be transmitted mimetically, on the basis of practices observed in home and street. In consequence, behaviour once governed by habit is now governed by rule. This new edition allows the author to deal with criticisms raised since the essay, long established as a classic in the field, was originally published, and enables readers to gain a fuller perspective on a topic central to today’s Jewish world and its development.

An amazing weaving together of the service we all know, in Hebrew and English, with astounding works of art--poems from many different sources, exceptional page design, and beautiful, meditative color images by the brilliant Tobi Kahn--and with thoughtful commentary that explicates the tradition and orients us to the work yet to be done. There are many Haggadot with various themes, but this is one for the ages, allowing each user to pull out favorite poems, highlight specific directives, open up thoughtful seder table discussions, and become truly immersed in the holiday." -Ruth Messinger, Global Ambassador and Past President, American Jewish World Service

Book B chol L vavcha With All Your Heart

Download or read book B chol L vavcha With All Your Heart written by Rabbi Harvey J. Fields and published by CCAR Press. This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively revised third edition, now compatible with Mishkan T'filah, offers many voices and unique, contemporary perspectives on our siddur, the order of the service, and the meaning of individual prayers. It reflects on the ways in which our prayer practices continue to evolve. This is an essential educational resource and is indispensable for bar/bat mitzvah and confirmation preparation, as well as for Introduction to Judaism courses and general adult education. "This timely and creative update of a timeless commentary will inspire a new generation of teachers and learners to explore their own expression of Jewish prayer. The rabbinic source materials, contemporary readings, poetry, and probing questions all come together in a seamless whole that serves to open the heart to ever deeper meaning and possibility in our sacred liturgy." - Rabbi Dr. Lisa Grant, Director of the Rabbinical Program, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, New York "As a young Jewish educator fresh out of graduate school, I turned to the original edition of this book to teach my b'nei mitzvah students. I have come back to it over the decades for the thoughtful commentary and context it has given me as a teacher and teacher of teachers. As the foreword notes, Rabbi Harvey Fields, a consummate gardener, understood the need to prune a vine to encourage new growth. This new edition showcases that new growth yet continues to provide both the ease and depth that have always made it a "go to" on my bookshelf. The updated explanations, references, and questions reflect Mishkan T'filah's fresh approach to prayer. In short, B'chol L'vavcha is a stunning tribute to Rabbi Fields as well as to those who have come after him to encourage our Movement's evolving relationship to worship. Every page I turned inspired a new idea for a lesson, activity, or wondering I could share with my b'nei mitzvah tutors, religious school students, families, and adult learners. And personally, it sparked a renewal of my own belief in the power of prayer to come from my heart and to fill all of my heart." - Dr. Katherine Schwartz, President, Association of Reform Jewish Educators

Download or read book The Book of Jonah written by Shmuly Yanklowitz and published by CCAR Press. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Jonah is a unique text in the Jewish canon. Among the shortest books in the Bible, it is also one of the most mysterious and morally ambiguous. Who is this prophet running from God, hiding at the bottom of the ocean? Why does he struggle with God's mission to save and forgive Israel's enemies? In this volume, Rabbi Dr. Yanklowitz shows that the Book of Jonah delivers a message of human responsibility in a shared world. Illuminating such contemporary ethical issues as animal welfare, incarceration, climate change, weapons of mass destruction, and Jewish-Muslim relations, this social justice commentary urges us to join in repairing a broken world--a call that we, unlike Jonah, must hasten to answer.

Book excerpt: Enter These Gates is a High Holy Day companion for our times, with more than one hundred new poems, prayers, and meditations for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Poet-liturgist Alden Solovy draws from his unique spirit to blend today's struggles and joys with classic themes, layering a contemporary voice into beloved motifs. Enter These Gates is a vital resource for individual prayer, study, and communal worship. Themes include confession, repentance, forgiveness, and memory, as well as frailty, seeing holiness, and what Solovy calls "the ancient journey." A companion to the machzor, Enter These Gates offers a fresh yet deeply rooted approach to heightening our experience of the Days of Awe. It is said that no one can put into words "the fragrance of a rose," but Alden Solovy comes very close. His poetry bridges the worlds of sacred and everyday; to read him is to get closer to the Divine. As a worship leader, these poems are essential in my preparation. Their mix of honesty and hope is redemptive. ---Rabbi Edwin Goldberg, coeditor of Mishkan HaNefesh: Machzor for the Days of Awe As in all of Alden Solovy's poetry, Enter These Gates sings to us and opens our hearts. The melody of his words moves us to find new meaning in a piece of liturgy or a Biblical text. He understands our questions, fears, and hopes, and gives voice to them all. ---Merri Lovinger Arian, Professor of Practice, Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music, Hebrew Union College--Jewish Institute of Religion Once again, Alden Solovy demonstrates why he is one of the great pay'tanim (liturgical poets) of our time. With depth and warmth, he opens a window onto the Jewish soul. His words are desperately needed during these challenging times; they will lift us all to God. ---Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin, author of Tikkun Ha'Am/Repairing Our People: Israel and the Crisis of Liberal Judaism Alden Solovy's prayer poems give each and every one of us a language for seeking after and hoping for a direct and intimate experience of God. His pieces powerfully resonate with the traditional prayers, but make space for us as individuals. ---From the foreword by Rabbi Naamah Kelman, Dean, HUC-JIR in Jerusalem, 2008-23
