Dans ce contexte, le projet SESAME (Système d' Exploitation de Séquences Audiovisuelles et Multimédias enrichi par l' Expérience), financé par le CNET et rassemblant plusieurs équipes de recherche de différents laboratoires (le LIP de l' ENS-Lyon, le LISI et RFV de l'INSA-Lyon et le LISA de CPE-Lyon) et des partenaires industriels (France 3 Rhône-Alpes et INA Lyon), vise à étudier la problématique générale de l'accès efficace, par le contenu, aux séquences audiovisuelles archivées. Cette problématique requiert la conjugaison de plusieurs compétences dans différents domaines tels que l'archivage brut des séquences audiovisuelles, le développement d'outils d'aide à l'extraction automatique des contenus sémantiques des séquences, le traitement efficace des requêtes d'accès aux données, etc. Faisant partie de ce projet, nous nous sommes particulièrement intéressés au stockage et à l'accès isochrone aux séquences audiovisuelles archivées. Ctee problématique nous a conduit à concevoir et à mettre en oeuvre un serveur de séquences audiovisuelles. Après avoir proposer une architecture fonctionnelle de ce dernier qui tient compte à la fois des caractéristiques et des exigences de l'application SESAME, nous avons approfondi trois points clés du serveur : (a) la gestion de cache en proposant de nouvelles heuristiques basées sur des informations sémantiques et structurelles sur les objets manipulés. Les résultats des expérimentations ont montré un gain de près de 18% par rapport aux techniques concurrentes. (b) la gestion des accès multi-séquences en développant une nouvelle heuristique. Cette dernière permet une réduction d'environ 20% de la charge du serveur. (c) enfin, la mise en oeuvre du serveur vidéo en choisissant une grappe de PC connectés via un réseau ahut débit (Myrinet) comme plate-forme matérielle et en adoptant un environnement de développement parallèle multithreadé (PM2). Les premiers résultats d'expérimentations sur une grappe de 8 PC montrent des temps de latence d'accès de l'ordre de 165 millisecondes et une capacité totale de 168 flux vidéo (de type MPEG 1) simultanés avec des disques à 6 Mo / s de bande passante.
