Book In the Shadow of the Dictators

Download or read book In the Shadow of the Dictators written by Paul Corthorn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-08-23 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Corthorn presents an illuminating, in-depth study of the British Left's response to the rise of international fascism in the 1930s. He uses a range of newly available archival sources to analyse how the Labour left - which took the form of the Socialist League between 1932 and 1937 - and the Independent Labour Party reacted to developments such as Mussolini's invasion of Abyssinia, Franco's uprising in Spain and Hitler's drive for territorial expansion. He argues that their responses to these threats from the fascist dictators were shaped above all by their constantly changing views of another dictatorship: the Soviet Union under Stalin. 'an elegant piece of innovative research on the Labour left between 1932 and 1939' 'based on an impressive amount of research and on a perceptive and sensitive handling of the evidence collected' 'this elegantly written book fills a major gap in the existing literature' Professor E F Biagini, University of Cambridge

Book Transforming the Skies

Download or read book Transforming the Skies written by Peter Reese and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Armistice of 1918, the British Air Industry and the newly founded RAF held a low place in national priorities. The RAF was rapidly run down, with the infant airlines being given the least possible help, and this neglect continued during the 1920s. The RAF's role was questioned and civilian air travel remained a dream for most and the province of the well-heeled few. But the breakdown of the Geneva Disarmament Talks led to renewed interest in the National Air Force, and the rise of the European dictators brought calls for rapid modernisation and interceptor aircraft, together with the development of further European civilian air routes. Here, Peter Reese charts the dramatic changes that swept aviation across the dynamic interwar period, revealing the transformative last-minute preparations for defence in a world where much depended on the contributions of some outstanding individuals.

Book The Labour Party in Britain and Norway

Download or read book The Labour Party in Britain and Norway written by David Redvaldsen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution of 1917, the nature, aims and trajectories of the Labour parties of Europe were fundamentally altered and transformed. In this compelling and thoughtful analysis of the Labour parties of Britain and Norway, David Redvaldsen offers an insight into the successes and failures of these two parties as they faced the challenges of the economic and political situation of the interwar era and their relentless pursuit of power. Redvaldsen asks what made each party successful, and by proposing that the Labour Party of Norway was the more successful of the two, draws important conclusions that have resonance for the study of political parties in general. It will thus be of utmost relevance not only to students and researchers of left-wing politics, but also to those interested in the nature of the pursuit of power itself in the crucial interwar period.

It is a critical work that examines the Board of Pensions in its broad historical, social, economic, and theological context. Utilizing the case study approach, the authors show how a major Protestant denomination produced its present retirement and protection program for church employees. Book excerpt: White working-class conservatives have played a decisive role in American history, particularly in their opposition to social justice movements, radical critiques of capitalism, and government help for the poor and sick. While this pattern is largely seen as a post-1960s development, Poor Man's Fortune tells a different story, excavating the long history of white working-class conservatism in the century from the Civil War to World War II. With a close study of metal miners in the Tri-State district of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, Jarod Roll reveals why successive generations of white, native-born men willingly and repeatedly opposed labor unions and government-led health and safety reforms, even during the New Deal. With painstaking research, Roll shows how the miners' choices reflected a deep-seated, durable belief that hard-working American white men could prosper under capitalism, and exposes the grim costs of this view for these men and their communities, for organized labor, and for political movements seeking a more just and secure society. Roll's story shows how American inequalities are in part the result of a white working-class conservative tradition driven by grassroots assertions of racial, gendered, and national privilege.
