Book excerpt: Numerous ancient texts describe human sacrifices and other forms of ritual killing: in 480 BC Themistocles sacrifices three Persian captives to Dionysus; human scapegoats called pharmakoi are expelled yearly from Greek cities, and according to some authors they are killed; Locrin girls are hunted down and slain by the Trojans; on Mt Lykaion children are sacrificed and consumed by the worshippers; and many other texts report human sacrifices performed regularly in the cult of the gods or during emergencies such as war and plague. Archaeologists have frequently proposed human sacrifice as an explanation for their discoveries: from Minoan Crete children's bones with knife-cut marks, the skeleton of a youth lying on a platform with a bronze blade resting on his chest, skeletons, sometimes bound, in the dromoi of Mycenaean and Cypriot chamber tombs; and dual man-woman burials, where it is suggested that the woman was slain or took her own life at the man's funeral. If the archaeologists' interpretations and the claims in the ancient sources are accepted, they present a bloody and violent picture of the religious life of the ancient Greeks, from the Bronze Age well into historical times. But the author expresses caution. In many cases alternative, if less sensational, explanations of the archaeological are possible; and it can often be shown that human sacrifices in the literary texts are mythical or that late authors confused mythical details with actual practices.Whether the evidence is accepted or not, this study offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious thought of the ancient Greeks and into changing modern conceptions of their religious behaviour.

Book excerpt: This essay is a synthesis of theories, hypotheses and conclusions concerning Minoan religion, from the time of Sir Arthur Evans to the present. It does not present new evidence nor new documentation, but does analyze the problems and goals of contemporary academics' discussion. The analysis reveals how Evans' theories have been modified and updated through modern methods and the introduction of new disciplines. The time covered is from Early Minoan III-Late Minoan II (c.2200-1400 BC). The discussion is limited to Crete with occasional references to the religion of the Greek mainland. The evidence examined emphasizes the importance of religious sites and of the part that sacrifice, ritual and sacred garments played in Minoan religion. The discussion reveals that early scholars, including Evans, drew on the knowledge of preceding generations to arrive at their conclusions. Some of the evidence formulated by scholars in the 19th century remained the basis of ideas in the early 20th century. The ultimate goal of this paper is to stimulate the interest of new students in Aegean history, particularly in Minoan civilization.

Such ideas challenge rather passive assumptions modern Western observers hold about the nature of religious feelings and experiences, in particular the depictions of altered states of consciousness in ancient art, and the visionary potential of dance gestures. Speculative asides on the potential for a Minoan origin for Classical Greek humanism, and hints in the imagery on ancient Cretan conceptions of the cosmos, are set against sound archaeological theories to explain this lively and dynamic corpus of images. Book excerpt: This work aspires to contribute to the study of ritual in as constructive and methodologically sound way as possible. The contentious issue of ritual interpretation is deliberately avoided. Instead, methodologies for positively recognising ritual and assessing its establishment are developed. The study of the establishment of ritual is based on the premise that it can be a valuable source of information for the dynamics and establishment of the given society. The entire study takes the special perspective of prehistoric and more specifically of Minoan archaeology, concentrating on the case of some open air rituals. Firstly, ritual value is attributed to some Minoan open air sites and to the relevant iconography. Subsequently, following the methodology developed in the first chapters, it is shown that all studied rituals were highly established. Moreover, some of these ritual sites could be seen as entities which also managed, produced, and invested wealth, demonstrating the great establishment of the respective rituals, and further contributing to it through their own establishment. The high level of establishment of the Minoan ritual sphere, as seen through the open air rituals, points to the great importance of rituals to the dynamics of Minoan society. It also implies a high level of establishment of other spheres such as the political or that of social relations. Finally it contributes to the overall establishment of Minoan society, as a factor which unified the politically fragmented island. Our discussion of the Minoan material demonstrated that the methodologies developed for the attribution of ritual value to an activity and for the assessment of its establishment can be beneficial for prehistoric archaeology and for most social sciences. The Minoan material profited from these ideas but also showed that their implementation is feasible.
