Book This Strange and Sacred Scripture

Download or read book This Strange and Sacred Scripture written by Matthew Richard Schlimm and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament can seem strange and disturbing to contemporary readers. What should Christians make of Genesis 1-3, seemingly at odds with modern scientific accounts? Why does the Old Testament contain so much violence? How should Christians handle texts that give women a second-class status? Does the Old Testament contradict itself? Why are so many Psalms filled with anger and sorrow? What should we make of texts that portray God as filled with wrath? Combining pastoral insight, biblical scholarship, and a healthy dose of humility, gifted teacher and communicator Matthew Schlimm explores perennial theological questions raised by the Old Testament. He provides strategies for reading and appropriating these sacred texts, showing how the Old Testament can shape the lives of Christians today and helping them appreciate the Old Testament as a friend in faith.

  • Author : José Esteban Muñoz
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press

Download or read book Disidentifications written by José Esteban Muñoz and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is more to identity than identifying with one’s culture or standing solidly against it. José Esteban Muñoz looks at how those outside the racial and sexual mainstream negotiate majority culture—not by aligning themselves with or against exclusionary works but rather by transforming these works for their own cultural purposes. Muñoz calls this process “disidentification,” and through a study of its workings, he develops a new perspective on minority performance, survival, and activism.Disidentifications is also something of a performance in its own right, an attempt to fashion a queer world by working on, with, and against dominant ideology. By examining the process of identification in the work of filmmakers, performance artists, ethnographers, Cuban choteo, forms of gay male mass culture (such as pornography), museums, art photography, camp and drag, and television, Muñoz persistently points to the intersecting and short-circuiting of identities and desires that result from misalignments with the cultural and ideological mainstream in contemporary urban America.Muñoz calls attention to the world-making properties found in performances by queers of color—in Carmelita Tropicana’s “Camp/Choteo” style politics, Marga Gomez’s performances of queer childhood, Vaginal Creme Davis’s “Terrorist Drag,” Isaac Julien’s critical melancholia, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s disidentification with Andy Warhol and pop art, Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s performances of “disidentity,” and the political performance of Pedro Zamora, a person with AIDS, within the otherwise artificial environment of the MTV serialThe Real World.

Book Biological diversity of the Minnesota caddisflies Insecta Trichoptera

Download or read book Biological diversity of the Minnesota caddisflies Insecta Trichoptera written by David C. Houghton and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains illustrations, statewide abundances, distributions, adult flight periodicities, and habitat affinities for all of the 277 known Minnesota caddisfly species. Many species, especially within the long-lived shredder families Limnephilidae and Phryganeidae, have decreased in distribution and abundance during the past 75 years, particularly those once common within the Northwestern and Southern regions. Many species now appear regionally extirpated, and a few have disappeared from the entire state. This loss of species in the Northwestern and Southern regions, and probably elsewhere, is almost certainly relatd to the conversion of many habitats to large-scale agriculture during the mid-20th century. With baseline data now in place, any future changes to the Minnesota caddisfly fauna can be evaluated with much greater confidence and precision.

Book Perspectives on Commoning

Download or read book Perspectives on Commoning written by Guido Ruivenkamp and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of socialism’s demise and liberalism’s loss of direction, new ideas are needed for the next major realignment of the social and political domain. Making a unique contribution to the idea of ‘the commons’, this book offers a radical form of direct democracy with real-world implications. But whereas much of the current scholarship has looked at the commons from the perspective of governance, this book instead focuses on ‘commoning’ as social practice. Perspectives on Commoning argues that the commons are not just resources external to us, but are a function or characterisation of what we do. Thus, we can talk of the act of commoning, positioning our behaviour beyond the domains of the private and the public, beyond the dichotomy of capitalism versus socialism. Covering everything from biopolitics to urban spaces, this impressive range of international contributors address the commons as both theory and history, providing a useful review of current conceptions as well as practical proposals for the future. A unique consolidation of philosophy, sociology and economics, the book shows how a new understanding of the commons as practice will help to achieve its full emancipatory potential.
