Book The Distinctive Character of the Free University in Amsterdam 1880 2005

Download or read book The Distinctive Character of the Free University in Amsterdam 1880 2005 written by Arie Theodorus van Deursen and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated by Herbert Donald Morton The central theme of this history is the Free University as a private institution founded to provide Christian higher education. At its founding in 1880, the Vrije University had only five professors and five students. Among the other public universities, it struck an odd figure and seemed destined for failure. Yet founder Abraham Kuyper never wavered in his determination to build a special Reformed, Calvinist university. Arie van Deursen here recounts the engrossing history of this unique university in its 125th year, using fully documented archival sources to detail the school's ups and downs over the years.

Book Christendom and Its Discontents

Download or read book Christendom and Its Discontents written by Scott L. Waugh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the eleventh century onward, Latin Christendom was torn by discontent and controversy. As the Church and secular rulers defined more clearly than ever before the laws and institutions on which they based their power, they demanded greater uniformity and obedience to their authority. The essays in this book cast new light on the dynamics of repression, highlighting the controversies and discontent that troubled medieval society. Looking especially at the mechanisms underlying the dissemination of heterodoxy and its repression, the religious aspirations of women, the fate of non-Christian minorities in Europe, and changing boundaries between orthodoxy and heterodoxy, the authors provide a new understanding of the Church's response to the diversity of belief and practice by which it was confronted.

  • Author : Meg Leja
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press

  • ISBN : 0812298500

Download or read book Embodying the Soul written by Meg Leja and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embodying the Soul explores the possibilities and limitations of human intervention in the body's health across the ninth-century Carolingian Empire. Early medieval medicine has long been cast as a superstitious, degraded remnant of a vigorous, rational Greco-Roman tradition. Against such assumptions, Meg Leja argues that Carolingian scholars engaged in an active debate regarding the value of Hippocratic knowledge, a debate framed by the efforts to define Christian orthodoxy that were central to the reforms of Charlemagne and his successors. From a subject with pagan origins that had suspicious links with magic, medical knowledge gradually came to be classified as a sacred art. This development coincided with an intensifying belief that body and soul, the two components of individual identity, cultivated virtue not by waging combat against one another but by working together harmoniously. The book demonstrates that new discussions regarding the legitimacy of medical learning and the merits of good health encouraged a style of self-governance that left an enduring mark on medieval conceptions of individual responsibility. The chapters tackle questions about the soul's material occupation of the body, the spiritual meaning of illness, and the difficulty of diagnosing the ills of the internal bodily cavity. Combating the silence on "dark-age" medicine, Embodying the Soul uncovers new understandings of the physician, the popularity of preventative regimens, and the theological importance attached to dietary regulation and bloodletting. In presenting a cultural history of the body, the book considers a broad range of evidence: theological and pastoral treatises, monastic rules, court poetry, capitularies, hagiographies, biographies, and biblical exegesis. Most important, it offers a dynamic reinterpretation of the large numbers of medical manuscripts that survive from the ninth century but have rarely been the focus of historical study.

Book A Classified Bibliography of the History of Dutch Medicine 1900 1974

Download or read book A Classified Bibliography of the History of Dutch Medicine 1900 1974 written by G.A. Lindeboom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I. In some periods of the past Netherlands medicine has played a major role in the evolution of European medicine; today its history still enjoys much in terest even at the other side of the Ocean. In this bibliography it has been my endeavour to compile references for all that has been written on the history of Dutch medicine in our country and elsewhere in our age. The main concern of this work is with the medicine of the Northern Nether lands. However, before the end of the sixteenth century the Northern and South ern Netherlands were not yet divided into two separate countries; they were still politically one and for the greater part spoke the same Flemish language. So be fore their separation the present-day Belgium and Netherlands also had a com mon medical history. Therefore many entries have been included which bear on early (and sometimes later) Flemish medicine, but it has not been the inten tion to strive for completeness in this respect.
