In its scale and impact, it was the largest conflict yet to take place on African soil. The early stages were disastrous for the British, beginning with the unsuccessful attack from the sea on the port of Tanga, described as "one of the most notable failures in British military history." Additionally, it identifies the critical factors that together led to British defeat at Tanga.
