This book was released on 2006-03-19 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his own words, the victor of El Alamein tells his life story in a book that’s “an absolutejoy to read and may be described as a tour-de-force” (Belfast News Letter). First published in 1958 Montgomery’s memoirs cover the full span of his career first as a regimental officer in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and then as a Staff Officer. His choice of the Warwickshires was due to his lack of money. He saw service in India before impressing with his courage, tactical skill and staff ability in the Great War. Despite his tactless uncompromising manner his career flourished between the wars but it was during the retreat to Dunkirk that his true brilliance as a commander revealed itself. The rest is history, but in this autobiography we can hear Monty telling his side of the story of the great North African Campaign followed by the even more momentous battles against the enemy “and, sadly, the Allies” as he strove for victory in North West Europe. His interpretation of the great campaign is of huge importance and reveals the deep differences that existed between him and Eisenhower and other leading figures. His career ended in disappointment and frustration being temperamentally unsuited to Whitehall and the political machinations of NATO.

Book excerpt: Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was an iconic figure in the British and world's history, most known for his victory over Napoleon Buonaparte at Waterloo in 1815. With Marshal Ney and Prussian general Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Wellington defeated the French troops, bringing the Napoleonic era in Europe. Yet, the life of Wellington was full of other important events. Twice in his life, he took the position of Prime Minister as a member of the Tory cabinet. He also was appointed a Governor of Plymouth, a Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, and Constable of the Tower of London. His military career included numerous trips to different parts of the world, including Holland, India, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, and France. The prosperous army career of the Duke of Wellington includes many victories thanks to his strategic talent. The plans of his battles are still a subject of studies in military schools all over the world. A reader has a unique chance to learn about the most critical battles and political events of the Napoleonic era from the memoirs of Wellington. The book tells his life story from the beginning of his political career to the victory in the Battle at Waterloo.

Book Military Memoirs of Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Military Memoirs of Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington Vol 1 of 2 written by Moyle Sherer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Memoirs of Field Marshal, the Duke of Wellington, Vol. 1 of 2 Seventeen years have passed since, upon the plain of Waterloo, the illustrious subject of this memoir crowned his military fame; and, by one surpassing victory, closed his vast, various, and splendid services in the field. Of all the wars in which he was engaged, peace, "the mother and the nurse of all that is good for man," was the blessed end! The difficulty of doing any justice in such narrow limits to the development of a military character so eminent and unrivalled as that of the Duke of Wellington, has been severely felt by the Author. To produce a closely digested narrative of his achievements, suitable for the general reader, is the object of these volumes. The task has been laborious; for the Author had to read, compare, and reconcile many and various relations of the events which he describes; and to extract and condense the facts which they contain. He owes full acknowledgments to the Histories of Colonel Jones, Mr. Southey, and Colonel Napier; and especial thanks to some private friends, for the kindness with which they have afforded him information. For the opinions, military or political, which may be expressed or implied in these volumes, as well as for their general style, the Author alone is responsible. The work being of a professional nature, that interference which is generally understood to fall within the province of an Editor, has not, in the present instance, been exercised by Dr. Lardner. Book Alexander Memoirs 1940 1945

Download or read book Alexander Memoirs 1940 1945 written by Alexander of Tunis and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his first meeting with General Alexander in August 1942, Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks wrote that: By repute he was Winston Churchills fire brigade chief par excellence: the man who was always dispatched to retrieve the most desperate situations.Churchill was indeed in need of a fire brigade chief. Allied forces had been chased back across the desert by Rommel. Alexander bought a new hope to the Desert Rats: he instilled them with his own confidence and thought of victory. Under his command, Montgomery was ready to fight and win the battle of El Alamein. Even as his generals drove the enemy from North Africa, Alexander was planning far ahead for Sicily and Operation Husky: the first major seaborne invasion by either side during the war.It was said that before El Alamein the Allies never knew victory, and after El Alamein never knew defeat: much of the credit belongs to Alexander. For decades his contribution to the British efforts in both wars has been overlooked. Here, however, is a comprehensive edition of his personal and candid memoirs, which includes judgments on such men as Montgomery, Patton and Churchill. He also details his role in leading the withdrawal of the 1st Infantry Division at Dunkirk, his dealings with Stilwell in Burma and the bombing of the Monte Cassino abbey.
