Ethiopia is among few world countries which are currently in fast economic growth. The role of microfinance institutions in the economic growth of the country is very significant. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: Masters, Addis Ababa University (National bank of ethiopia), language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this paper was to identify the root causes of the problems and challenges faced by Ethiopian microfinance sector and to, subsequently, recommend remedial measures. In depth interviews have been used to identify and understand the problems and challenges faced by microfinance institutions. This study depicted that Primary cause for all problems is fund shortage and; in turn, the primary cause for fund shortage is insufficient start up equity capital. In addition, ownership structure is identified as supplementary cause of governance problems. Finally, it is recommended that solving these couple of problems is a must to overcome all challenges of the sector as taking measures on other problems is unlikely to provide long-lasting relief from the undesired effect.

Book Financial Sustainability and Outreach of Microfinance Institutions in Ethiopia

Download or read book Financial Sustainability and Outreach of Microfinance Institutions in Ethiopia written by Gashaw Tadesse Abate and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing commercialization and competition in microfinance drives the focus of micro lenders from outreach per se to achieving financial sustainability in serving the poor. Such a goal can conflict with the traditional social mission of microfinance - outreach to the poor. In places where credit markets are inefficient, attaining financial sustainability while serving the poor depends largely on the ability of lenders to overcome the costs of market contracts and constraints. Such ability of cost containment often varies by lending terms and organizational forms. Using disaggregated data of microfinance providers in Ethiopia, we compared financial cooperatives and specialized or non-bank microfinance institutions on their outreach, financial performance and ability to achieve financial self-sufficiency together with outreach to the poor. The results show that nonbank microfinance providers perform relatively well in terms of breadth and depth of outreach, but face higher cost, which creates tension between outreach and financial sustainability. In contrast, there exists a positive complementarity between outreach and financial viability for financial cooperatives. On average, financially self-sufficient cooperatives lend small size loans and serve larger proportions of women borrowers, implying a greater depth of outreach together with achieving financial sustainability. While non-bank microfinance providers do better in expanding outreach, based on the findings, financial cooperatives better contain their costs, balance social and economic goals and enable the microfinance industry to fulfill its full promise - serving the poor on cost-covering basis.

Book Board Committees and Performance in Microfinance Institutions

Download or read book Board Committees and Performance in Microfinance Institutions written by Roy Mersland and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper empirically relates subordinate board structures with improved financial and social performance in microfinance institutions (MFIs). The research question is analyzed using a panel data from 23 microfinance institutions in Ethiopia over a period of 2006-- 2011. Random effects panel data estimation is applied to analyze the link between board committees and MFI's performance. In MFIs with larger than average boards, the findings demonstrate significant ties between financial and outreach performance and how their boards are structured. The structure of board committees moderates the relation between board size and financial and outreach performance measures. Importantly, board committee benefits MFIs through better operational self-sufficiency, lower operating expenses, greater outreach to customers, and outreach to poorer customers using average loan size as our proxy. Practitioners within microfinance sector, and those operating in advisory and regulatory roles to the sector could benefit from the argument advanced in the paper in that normative recommendation to restructure boards or establish committees requires reevaluating the board characteristics vis-à-vis the optimal monitoring, controlling, and advising needs of the institution. Prior literature focuses on who sits on boards, how large are the boards, and how independent are they. This paper advances our understanding of the structure of board committees and how this may affect the performance of MFI. This approach provides better representation of director's role and is thereby a good test of board effectiveness.

Book The Triangle of Microfinance

Download or read book The Triangle of Microfinance written by Manfred Zeller and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s when the microfinance revolution began, much has been accomplished, but the field became more refined in the 1990s as a result of shifts in paradigms, strategies, and development practices. This volume addresses the three policy objectives that now occupy those who wish to use credit as a development tool: financial sustainability of microfinance institutions, outreach to the poor, and welfare impact. Inevitable tradeoffs exist among these objectives, and the book advances an analytical framework that assists students of and experts in microfinance to identify the tradeoffs and synergies at the institutional level and in the policy environment. The book features a wealth of empirical data and innovative analytical studies, and critically discusses the role of public support for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in light of the social costs and benefits generated by such financial systems. The book is organized into five parts. The first discusses the demand for and access to financial services by the poor, emphasizing that demand-oriented, pro-poor financial services are crucial in reaching the poor. The second is concerned with two of the criteria used to evaluate MFIs—outreach and financial sustainability. The third features innovative econometric studies seeking to evaluate the impact of MFIs at the household level. The fourth looks at the role of both public- and private-sector institutions in developing sustainable financial systems. And the fifth summarizes implications for policy and research. Given the lack of sound, empirical literature on microfinance, this volume is sure to advance knowledge and research methodology in the field.

There's nothing wrong with their seed, they just don't have enough space to grow" (Muhammad Yunus, 2007/3/22 in a Gulbenkian Conference in Lisbon). The major findings of the study indicate that MFIs operating in the city of Addis Ababa are expanding in terms of outreach but are sluggish in their speed as compared to their African peers. In addition, these institutions can survive in the near future even though their profitability is very negligible.
