Download or read book Christian Microenterprise Development written by David Bussau and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen a remarkable growth in mission in countries in the 10/40 window. Dynamic mission groups are always searching for authentic approaches to enable them to serve communities with integrity and remain faithful to the biblical message. Of the various approaches attempted, one in particular that has arrested the imagination and enthusiasm of many mission organizations is Microenterprise Development (MED). Recent surveys suggest that in excess of 1,200 different Christian organization are currently implementing MED in the two-thirds world. Alas, many of these efforts begin with little understanding of the basic fundamentals of creating a credit culture, with the discipline and knowledge of the best practices required. The objective of this handbook is to provide information to help Christian MED practitioners and donors better understand how to apply Christian MED in ways that build Christ's kingdom. The book draws from literature on secular MED and undertakes eight case studies of Christian MED programs from around the world. It then compares the findings from both to identify the strengths and weaknesses of Christian MED.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declines in real wages, increases in the number of poor families, and cutbacks to welfare and other safety-net programs have stimulated the popularity of microenterprise development programs (MDPs). These programs typically offer training and loans to individuals seeking to operate very small businesses. MDPs are often presented as a path to the self-sufficiency that comes with entrepreneurship and as an example of the success of market-based alternatives to government programs. In Bootstrap Dreams, Nancy C. Jurik analyzes the origins and maturation of these programs in the United States. Based on a national sample of fifty programs and an eight-year case study of one in particular, this is a rare book about microenterprise development. Jurik understands the positive social mission of MDPs, but she is not blind to the problems that they encounter. Jurik's clear perception of potential difficulties and her keen ability to place the microenterprise movement in the larger context of welfare reform and globalization make Bootstrap Dreams a valuable book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Businesses come to life as owners are allowed to speak in their own words in this first in-depth examination of self-employment told from the perspectives of low-income microentrepreneurs. The book systematically analyzes a range of issues, including who chooses to open a micro business, and why; what resources do they bring to their business venture; how well will their venture fare; and what contributes to the growth or decline of their business. The authors conclude that most microentrepreneurs believe self-employment offers a range of monetary and nonmonetary benefits and argue it would be more advantageous to view microenterprise as a social and economic development strategy rather than simply as an anti-poverty strategy. Based on this observation, a range of strategies to better promote microenterprise programs among the poor is advanced, with the goal of targeting the most promising approaches.

Grounded in research, this book is an invitation for followers of Jesus to sustain hope in long-term service. It's about moving past the false hope of idealism and the faint hope of disillusionment to discover true Christian hope. You will gain encouragement through the study of the book of Jeremiah woven throughout as the authors explore how the Lord prophetically met and sustained Jeremiah during his lifetime of faithfulness despite literally nothing going as he'd hoped. Glean further inspiration by reading the stories of Christian leaders from around the globe: Zimbabwe, Haiti, Guatemala, Poland, Palestine, the Philippines, India, Zambia, and Lebanon. For this is a moment when we need the global Church's perspective and influence. Don't give up and don't check out. These are confounding and perilous days, yet God's sustaining presence can bring joy, hope, and encouragement even amid heartache and disappointment.
