The Making of Michigan is a wide-ranging collection of primary accounts of life in Michigan during the pioneer period, the era from the 1820s to the outbreak of the Civil War. In this time of explosive growth, the state's population increased from 8,000 to 750,000. These emigrants brought the state into the union in 1837 and began to create a set of institutions and a way of life. Justin Kestenbaum draws on the rich documentary record left by those who sojourned in the state during this time and recorded their impressions. Not only pioneers but land speculators, missionaries, and sight-seers left valuable accounts of the Michigan landscape and its emerging society. Following a general introduction, the book is divided into six parts: The Interminable Forest, Laying the Foundation, The Great Migration, Education, A Vision of Life, and Political Life, each with its own brief introduction. Notes and a bibliography conclude this valuable resource history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Pioneer Society of the State of Michigan, Vol. 2: Together With Reports of County, Town, and District Pioneer Societies The dignity of labor is in all laudable undertakings. The labor of the pioneer in felling the forest and breaking up new land must be done by physical power, to prepare the way for labor-saving machinery. Brave pioneers, as you all more or less have been practical surveyors and mathematicians, you may, at your leisure, work out some problems to approximate at something near the amount of labor expended in preparing the fields for the successful use of labor-saving machinery the cost of buildings, the number cf miles of fence, the amount of crops grown and animals reared - and then extend it over the towns, counties and State, including in the calculation the building of thirty-three Opulent cities and numerous, villages and towns, all of which have received, more or less, the sustaining care of the pioneer. It is supposed by some that about one-half the population live in cities and villages. If so, it makes a market for some of the surplus products at home. It is understood that forty samples of wheat were exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition from forty counties in Michigan. This is a wide range of wheat-growing in one State. And the fruit excelled all for beauty and goodness. The Indian's Wigwam and hunter's cabin have been replaced by beautiful dwellings and costly mansions, combining all the orders of architecture. Your edifices for divine worship and schools of learning, your highways, railways and steam navigation are in successful Operation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Sampson Noll, a desperate run-away slave who hit his master over the head with a wagon stave have in common with Charlotte Preston, a young woman, who was in the first graduating class at Northern State Normal School? The first part of the answer is that both of these individuals lived in a region known as the U.P., the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The second part is that both these individuals were Americans of African descent. What would bring Mr. Noll, Ms. Preston, and other individuals of African descent to an isolated area of the United States where winter snowfalls can reach 200 inches and temperatures can be so cold that they can cause fog to freeze? Can you imagine entering an unfamiliar isolated region during a May passage riding in a steamboat across the choppy waters of the Straits of Mackinac to get to the land mass known as the Upper Peninsula? And once you managed to cross into this region of the United States, enduring early spring to falls end, you now have to deal with mosquitoes, no-see-ums,deer flies, stable flies, black flies, wood ticks, and deer ticks. As the months progress, you have to face bitter cold winters with no kinship support(unless your family came with you) to comfort you, and with only your hopes, dreams, and self reliance to sustain you. A variety of individuals of African descent did just that and settled in the Upper Peninsula. Coming from a perspective of the main opportunities that drew most people to the area, this book discusses people from their areas of interest and employment: lumber, mining, hunting, fishing, education, and sports. In the end, the book reveals what these individuals have inspired by their incredible tenacity.
