The latter burned the body of Servetus; the former are still burning his character and teachings by repeat ing the slanders originally invented by Calvin. Even so temperate a journal as the bibliotheca saora is not ashamed to denounce Servetus as a persistent liar, a foul reviler, and at the best a vain dreamer. (oct., 1909, p. Excerpt: ... tock & Strong's Theological Cyclopedia, vol. ix, p. 590). How far from the truth is this estimate of Servetus will be seen in our account of his doctrine of faith and charity. We think his appreciation of "practical ethics" will compare favorably with Luther's advice to Melanchthon: "Remain thou a sinner, and sin bravely but confide and rejoice still more bravely in Christ. As long as we are here we must sin. This life is not the habitation of righteousness. It is enough that we, by the treasure of grace, acknowledge the. Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world. From this the sin shall not tear us loose, even if we a thousand and a thousand times a day, commit fornication and murder." (Luther's Epistles. Vol. I. Jena, 1556, p. 345.) 4. THE LIFE AND WORK OF SERVETUS. The chief purpose of the present treatise is to bring out a systematic view of the theological doctrines of Servetus, and we must therefore confine our account of his life to a few general outlines. Michael Servetus was a Spaniard, born of a good family at Villanueva, Aragon, in the year 1509 (or 1511). Of his childhood nothing is known, but he is said to have entered the university of Saragossa at the age of fourteen years. Being an intellectual prodigy he rapidly acquired such a knowledge of Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Arabic that on account of his linguistic proficiency he was at the age of seventeen appointed secretary to Quintana, the father-confessor of Emperor Charles V. In this capacity he was present at the imperial coronation at Bologna, in 1529, where he became acquainted with the papal court in all its splendor and corruption. Soon afterwards he accompanied Quintana to the great Diet at Augsburg where the Keformers presented their famous " Confession, ..".

Book Calvin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard Cottret
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 2000-09
  • ISBN : 0802831591
  • Pages : 393 pages

Download or read book Calvin written by Bernard Cottret and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Modesty, softness, and mildness"-such was John Calvin, in his own words. This brief self-portrait will surprise posterity, quick as it is to detect in Calvin a deeply passionate man of zealous action. Calvin adds elsewhere: "I acknowledge myself to be timid, soft, and cowardly by nature." He repeated the same idea feelingly on the eve of his death, calling himself "timid" and "fearful" before an astounded group of pastors who knew by experience that the old fellow could raise up storms. These various descriptions of Calvin strongly underline the vigor of a character that owed all its energy to God alone. At the same time, the apparent contradictions within Calvin's personality make it hard to capture his true nature. The large number of biographies attempted to date attest to this fact, many of which simply picture Calvin as a rigid fundamentalist or as a totalitarian who ruled Geneva with an iron hand. Such interpretations, however, are much too one-dimensional. This sterling new biography by Bernard Cottret opts for a Calvin "in movement," thus distinguishing itself from works that present Calvin as a man of relatively static character. The aim of this book is simply to recover the truth, or rather to reclaim the intelligibility of a man in his time. This is a historian's Calvin, the work of a university professor who is neither a theologian nor an ordained minister. Cottret's welcome approach sheds new light on the great Reformer's personality by concentrating on the milieu in which Calvin did his life's work. In the largest part of the book, Cottret explores Calvin's life chronologically. We are introduced to the world into which Calvin was born, a Europe in the throes of upheaval owing to the development of the printing press and divergent religious views. We follow Calvin from his birth and childhood in Noyon to his school years in Paris. We accompany Calvin on his humanistic and literary pursuits in Basel, his early ministry in Geneva, and his halcyon Strasbourg years. Finally, we move again to Geneva, where the brunt of Calvin's serious-and better known-life was lived. Along the way we encounter the major issues of Calvin's day-the sacrifice of the Mass, iconoclasm, predestination, the Arianism of Michael Servetus-issues to which he reacted with all his religious emotion. We tarry with him in Geneva and get an up-close look at the governance of Calvinism's "holy city." And we share in Calvin's joys and sorrows through a reading of his prolific correspondence. In the final chapters, Cottret explores thematic aspects of Calvin's persona-Calvin the polemicist, the preacher, and the writer-and looks in greater depth at his foremost work, the Institutes of the Christian Religion. Widely acclaimed in its French edition, this balanced and beautifully written biography will take its place among the best-and most enjoyable-portraits of Calvin's life, work, and lasting influence.

Book Servetus Swedenborg and the Nature of God

Download or read book Servetus Swedenborg and the Nature of God written by Andrew Malcolm Thomas Dibb and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2005 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trinity was defined at the Council of Nicaea and the relationship of the human and divine natures of Christ was defined at Chalcedon. Very few questioned the Church's depictions of the nature of God. Two such mavericks, Michael Servetus (1509-1553) and Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), in spite of their Christian educations, rejected the Church's creedal understanding of God and the Trinity. Although they lived in two different ages- the Reformation and Enlightenment, and there is no evidence that Swedenborg ever read or even knew of Servetus- the two men came to remarkably similar conclusions about the nature of God. Each scholar stated that the Trinity does not rest in three Persons, but rather takes form in the single person of Jesus Christ, the visible God. Servetus was a superb scholar in his day. He mastered the Church Fathers and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the Bible. Servetus tragically perished in the flames at Geneva because of his beliefs. Swedenborg, likewise, was a well-known and respected scholar, philosopher, and anatomist. He dedicated the last thirty years of his life to biblical research, producing a series of some thirty volumes (in English) of theological writings. His work influenced many of the great thinkers and artists of the nineteenth century and continues to be read and studied in many parts of the world today.
