It also enables video- quality metrics to be created using arbitrary features. This data- driven design approach not only requires no detailed knowledge of the human visual system, but also allows a proper consideration of the temporal nature of video using a three-way prediction model, corresponding to the three-way structure of video. Using two simple example metrics, the author demonstrates not only that this purely data- driven approach outperforms state-of-the-art video-quality metrics, which are often optimized for specific properties of the human visual system, but also that multi-way data analysis methods outperform the combination of two-way data analysis methods and temporal pooling.

One of the most pertinent issues in securing mission-critical computing networks is the lack of effective security metrics which this book discusses in detail. Since “you cannot improve what you cannot measure”, a network security metric is essential to evaluating the relative effectiveness of potential network security solutions. The authors start by examining the limitations of existing solutions and standards on security metrics, such as CVSS and attack surface, which typically focus on known vulnerabilities in individual software products or systems. The first few chapters of this book describe different approaches to fusing individual metric values obtained from CVSS scores into an overall measure of network security using attack graphs. Since CVSS scores are only available for previously known vulnerabilities, such approaches do not consider the threat of unknown attacks exploiting the so-called zero day vulnerabilities. Therefore, several chapters of this book are dedicated to develop network security metrics especially designed for dealing with zero day attacks where the challenge is that little or no prior knowledge is available about the exploited vulnerabilities, and thus most existing methodologies for designing security metrics are no longer effective. Finally, the authors examine several issues on the application of network security metrics at the enterprise level. The second part analyzes the question of when these metrics are Einstein and gives many new examples. In doing this, certain facts are established about the ratios of the Killing forms of a Lie algebra and a subalgebra. Finally, some results are obtained for noncompact groups and more general compact homogeneous spaces.

Book excerpt: This book presents the analytic foundations to the theory of the hypoelliptic Laplacian. The hypoelliptic Laplacian, a second-order operator acting on the cotangent bundle of a compact manifold, is supposed to interpolate between the classical Laplacian and the geodesic flow. Jean-Michel Bismut and Gilles Lebeau establish the basic functional analytic properties of this operator, which is also studied from the perspective of local index theory and analytic torsion. The book shows that the hypoelliptic Laplacian provides a geometric version of the Fokker-Planck equations. The authors give the proper functional analytic setting in order to study this operator and develop a pseudodifferential calculus, which provides estimates on the hypoelliptic Laplacian's resolvent. When the deformation parameter tends to zero, the hypoelliptic Laplacian converges to the standard Hodge Laplacian of the base by a collapsing argument in which the fibers of the cotangent bundle collapse to a point. For the local index theory, small time asymptotics for the supertrace of the associated heat kernel are obtained. The Ray-Singer analytic torsion of the hypoelliptic Laplacian as well as the associated Ray-Singer metrics on the determinant of the cohomology are studied in an equivariant setting, resulting in a key comparison formula between the elliptic and hypoelliptic analytic torsions.
