Book Methods of Welding Metals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Methods of Welding Metals Classic Reprint written by James William Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Welding Metals The welding of brass, copper, and some other metals, is im practicable by the old hand method since copper would need to be raised to a very high temperature as compared with iron, and it is then.high1y oxidizable and liable to form a scale difficult to treat by any flux. It also passes quickly from the solid state to the molten state and is brittle near the welding temperature. With brass, it is difficult to avoid volatilization of the zinc before the Oopper constituent has been raised to the necessary temperature, and, furthermore, the alloy becomes very brittle near the welding temperature. Because of these facts such metals and alloys have been.united by brazing or soldering, Operations requiring considerable skill, and are expensive in the matter of solder, fluxes, heating appliances and labor charges. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book on Welding and Cutting Metals The oxy-acetylene welding and cutting torch has become so popular in the last few years, that almost every issue of the trade papers in any branch of work contains interesting accounts of new successes in the use of this powerful tool. The first application of the process, to commercial use, dates back to 1903, and its rapid growth in popularity is due to the ease and economy with which its intense heat 15 applied to any of the metal trades, to join two pieces by welding, or separate them by cutting without the stroke of a hammer. A notable example of the saving that may be effected by using this process is in the event of repairing a broken loco motive cylinder shown in Fig. 1. This cylinder had a piece broken out of the wall including a portion of the flange. Previous attempts to weld this piece in place by other methods had proven disastrous, and resulted in making the fracture larger. The oxy-acetylene process was then 'brought into use, and in less than a day's time a new piece was welded in as shown in Fig., 2. The cylinder was rebored, drilled, and the job finished without removing it from the locomotive. A great sawing in this case is credited to the fact that the loco motive was put back into service in a comparatively short time, and the repairs were made without dismantling. The durability of this work 1s illustrated in fact that this cylinder was welded July loth, 1910, and is still in successful operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Welding: A Practical Treatise on the Applications of Electric, Gas, and Thermit Welding to Manufacturing and Repair Work Welding, an Ancient Art. The art of joining metals is one of the oldest known to man. Even since the first cave dweller or half-monkey man hammered his first piece of iron or copper between two stones, the development of the art has gone forward, and will probably continue to go forward as long as men use metals. The welding of iron is apparently as old as the produc tion of that metal by man, for there is, in a temple yard of the ancient city of Delhi, India, an iron pillar nearly two thousand years old, which shows unmistakable evidences of having been welded. The shaft projects 22 feet above the surface of the ground, extends over 40 feet into the earth, and is about 16 inches in diameter. It was apparently welded into one piece from blooms weighing about 70 pounds each; the joints are as nearly perfect as if they had been made with our most modern equip ment, and yet they must have been forged by hand. Conditions for Successful Welding. Strictly speaking, weld ing is the uniting, or joining, of two pieces of metal by hammer ing them together while they are hot enough to be plastic, and the application of the term is thereby almost limited to work done in a blacksmith shop. Broadly speaking, however, any process by which two pieces of metal are joined by causing cohesion of the molecules of the pieces is called welding. The best modern methods of welding are those in which cohesion is effected by means of high temperatures produced with gas or electricity. Many metals which cannot be welded by hammering may be welded by the new processes, which include brazing and soldering. Book Electric Arc Welding of Steel

Download or read book Electric Arc Welding of Steel written by Henry S. Rawdon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric-Arc Welding of Steel: I. Properties of the Arc-Fused Metal The application of arc welding In the Shipbuilding industry is one of the most important and extensive applications which has as yet been proposed for this method. During the year 1918, at the request of and with the cooperation of the Welding Research Subcommittee of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, an extensive program was outlined by the Bureau of Standards for the study of this type of Welding. The principal object of the research was to determine inan empirical way by actual welding tests carried out by Skilled operators the relative values and merits of the different types of electrodes or welding pencils which are available commercially Due to changed conditions, however, at the close of the year 1918 the original program was modified and Shortened very considerably. The results of the investigation here given. Relate principally to the nature and characteristic properties of the weld, and in particular those of the 'fused - ln metal. In drawing upgthe modified program it was decided to make the study of the characteristic properties of the fused in metal the primary object of the investigation, the study of the merits of the different types of electrodes being a secondary one. Since the metal of any weld produced by the electric arc fusion method is essentially a casting because there is no refinement possible as in some of the other methods, it is apparent that the efficiency of the weld is dependent upon the properties of this arc-fused metal. Hence a knowledge of its properties is of fundamental importance in the study of electric-arc welds. Though the results obtained throughout the entire series of examinations are not so conclusive as might be desired, it is believed that they contribute very materially to our knowledge of the properties of the fused-in metal, which conditions the serviceability of the electric-arc weld. Book Soldering Brazing and Welding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soldering Brazing and Welding Classic Reprint written by Bernard E. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soldering, Brazing, and Welding Apart from the use of rivets, screws, etc., metal is commonly joined by soldering, brazing, or welding, three groups of processes that have one thing in com mon - the use of heat to fuse either the metals them selves or an alloy which is interposed to consolidate the joint. The word solder is derived through the French from a Latin word meaning solid. Soldering may be soft or hard. Soft-solder ing uses lead-tin alloys which are easily melted in a bunsen gas flame or with a hot iron or bit; while hard soldering employs a silver-copper alloy, to melt which a mouth blowpipe at least is necessary. Brazing is hard-soldering with spelter (brass), and a forge or a heavy blowlamp or a powerful blowpipe must be employed to provide the heat. Book Electric Arc Welding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electric Arc Welding Classic Reprint written by E. Wanamaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Arc Welding The authors of this work have not attempted to cover the electric welding art in its broadest sense. The book is confined almost exclusively to autogenous electric arc welding. The phenomena of the welding arc, and the metallurgy of welding, are in such a state of development that the authors' in formation has been limited to the research which has come under their observation. Many phases of these subjects have been left, therefore, to specialists more adequately equipped both as to electric and metallurgical data as well as laboratory apparatus. The effort has been made to present information that is most in demand for practical purposes. The material is conveniently and logically arranged for ready reference. A large amount of practical information on many phases of the application of the art has. Been incorporated; for instance, descriptions of welding systems and their installation, phenomena of the metallic and carbon 'welding arc, training of operators, sequence of metal. Disposition for various types of joints and building up operations, electrode materials used, weld ability of various metals, weld composition, thermal disturbances of parts affected by the welding process, physical properties of completed welds, efficiency of welding equipments expressed in pounds of metal used or deposited per kilowatt hours, welding cost, etc. It is desired to lay particular stress on the fact that a very small percentage of the possibilities and advantages of arc weld ing, from an industrial standpoint, are being made use of at the present time, and if this work will result in a broader application of the art, as well as further and more extensive research, the authors will feel well repaid for their humble efforts. Download or read book Autogenous Welding of Metals 1908 written by Louis Leon Bernier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autogenous Welding of Metals, 1908: Tr, From Reports of the National School of Arts and Trades of France The oxygen and hydrogen used in the oxyhydric burner may be obtained from the tanks in general use in the trade, in which these gases are compressed under a pressure of 300 to pounds per square inch. They may also be generated on the spot by the electrolysis of water, and then compressed under a pressure of 300 pounds, to be then distributed to the burners through appropriate pipe lines. In general, this latter principle is not applied because of the costly apparatus, the experienced personnel and the expensive maintenance which it requires. Moreover, the decomposition of the water into its elements and the fact that the hydrogen and oxygen pipe lines must of necessity run close to each other, constitute a source of danger and render impossible the production of these gases in the consumer's plant. As a rule all the oxyhydric burners in use are supplied from ordinary tanks containing the gases under pressure. The actual average prices are: oxygen, 4 cents per cubic foot° hydrogen, about I cent per cubic foot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Electric Welding

Download or read book Electric Welding written by Douglas T. Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Welding: A Comprehensive Treatise on the Practice of the Various Resistance and Arc Welding Processes, Covering Descriptions of the Machines and Apparatus Used and the Applications Both in Manufacturing and Repair Work Resistance Welding. In the resistance, incandescent or Thomson electric welding process, the metals to be welded are brought into intimate contact by being held closely together by metal clamps actuated by springs or levers, so as to permit a constant pressure on the parts to be welded, even after the metal at the welding surfaces becomes plastic. The parts to be welded form an electric circuit, and the resistance at the point of contact between the two surfaces to be welded pro duces a welding temperature in a very short time; the metal parts are then forced together and thus welded. A distinct feature of the resistance welding process is that the interior of the metal is raised to a welding temperature before the surface reaches that heat, so that, if the exterior surface is welded, it is certain that the interior is also properly welded, since it is at a somewhat higher heat. When work is heated for welding in a forge, the opposite conditions take place. A perfect weld may be indicated on the surface, but this weld may cover an imperfect joint inside.
