Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book started its life as a series of lectures given by the second author from the 1970’s onwards to students in their third and fourth years in the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics at Rostov State University. For these lectures there was also an audience of engineers and applied mechanicists who wished to understand the functional analysis used in contemporary research in their fields. These people were not so much interested in functional analysis itself as in its applications; they did not want to be told about functional analysis in its most abstract form, but wanted a guided tour through those parts of the analysis needed for their applications. The lecture notes evolved over the years as the first author started to make more formal typewritten versions incorporating new material. About 1990 the first author prepared an English version and submitted it to Kluwer Academic Publishers for inclusion in the series Solid Mechanics and its Applications. At that state the notes were divided into three long chapters covering linear and nonlinear analysis. As Series Editor, the third author started to edit them. The requirements of lecture notes and books are vastly different. A book has to be complete (in some sense), self contained, and able to be read without the help of an instructor.

Book Functional Analysis in Mechanics

Download or read book Functional Analysis in Mechanics written by Leonid P. Lebedev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a brief, practically complete, and relatively simple introduction to functional analysis. It also illustrates the application of functional analytic methods to the science of continuum mechanics. Abstract but powerful mathematical notions are tightly interwoven with physical ideas in the treatment of nontrivial boundary value problems for mechanical objects. This second edition includes more extended coverage of the classical and abstract portions of functional analysis. Taken together, the first three chapters now constitute a regular text on applied functional analysis. This potential use of the book is supported by a significantly extended set of exercises with hints and solutions. A new appendix, providing a convenient listing of essential inequalities and imbedding results, has been added. The book should appeal to graduate students and researchers in physics, engineering, and applied mathematics. Reviews of first edition: "This book covers functional analysis and its applications to continuum mechanics. The presentation is concise but complete, and is intended for readers in continuum mechanics who wish to understand the mathematical underpinnings of the discipline. ... Detailed solutions of the exercises are provided in an appendix." (L’Enseignment Mathematique, Vol. 49 (1-2), 2003) "The reader comes away with a profound appreciation both of the physics and its importance, and of the beauty of the functional analytic method, which, in skillful hands, has the power to dissolve and clarify these difficult problems as peroxide does clotted blood. Numerous exercises ... test the reader’s comprehension at every stage. Summing Up: Recommended." (F. E. J. Linton, Choice, September, 2003)

Book Advanced Finite Element Methods and Applications

Download or read book Advanced Finite Element Methods and Applications written by Thomas Apel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on some recent aspects of finite element methods and their applications is dedicated to Ulrich Langer and Arnd Meyer on the occasion of their 60th birthdays in 2012. Their work combines the numerical analysis of finite element algorithms, their efficient implementation on state of the art hardware architectures, and the collaboration with engineers and practitioners. Book Convex Models of Uncertainty in Applied Mechanics

Download or read book Convex Models of Uncertainty in Applied Mechanics written by Y. Ben-Haim and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognition of the need to introduce the ideas of uncertainty in a wide variety of scientific fields today reflects in part some of the profound changes in science and engineering over the last decades. Nobody questions the ever-present need for a solid foundation in applied mechanics. Neither does anyone question nowadays the fundamental necessity to recognize that uncertainty exists, to learn to evaluate it rationally, and to incorporate it into design. This volume provides a timely and stimulating overview of the analysis of uncertainty in applied mechanics. It is not just one more rendition of the traditional treatment of the subject, nor is it intended to supplement existing structural engineering books. Its aim is to fill a gap in the existing professional literature by concentrating on the non-probabilistic model of uncertainty. It provides an alternative avenue for the analysis of uncertainty when only a limited amount of information is available. The first chapter briefly reviews probabilistic methods and discusses the sensitivity of the probability of failure to uncertain knowledge of the system. Chapter two discusses the mathematical background of convex modelling. In the remainder of the book, convex modelling is applied to various linear and nonlinear problems. Uncertain phenomena are represented throughout the book by convex sets, and this approach is referred to as convex modelling. This book is intended to inspire researchers in their goal towards further growth and development in this field.

Book The Finite Element Method and Its Reliability

Download or read book The Finite Element Method and Its Reliability written by Ivo Babuška and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finite element method is a numerical method widely used in engineering. Experience shows that unreliable computation can lead to very serious consequences. Hence reliability questions stand are at the forefront of engineering and theoretical interests. This book presents the mathematical theory of the finite element method and is the first to focus on the questions of how reliable computed results really are. It addresses among other topics the local behaviour, errors caused by pollution, superconvergence, and optimal meshes. Many computational examples illustrate the importance of the theoretical conclusions for practical computations. Graduate students, lecturers, and researchers in mathematics, engineering, and scientific computation will benefit from the clear structure of the book, and will find this a very useful reference.

Book The Best Approximation Method in Computational Mechanics

Download or read book The Best Approximation Method in Computational Mechanics written by Theodore V., II Hromadka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the overwhelming use of computers in engineering, science and physics, the approximate solution of complex mathematical systems of equations is almost commonplace. The Best Approximation Method unifies many of the numerical methods used in computational mechanics. Nevertheless, despite the vast quantities of synthetic data there is still some doubt concerning the validity and accuracy of these approximations. This publication assists the computer modeller in his search for the best approximation by presenting functional analysis concepts. Computer programs are provided which can be used by readers with FORTRAN capability. The classes of problems examined include engineering applications, applied mathematics, numerical analysis and computational mechanics. The Best Approximation Method in Computational Mechanics serves as an introduction to functional analysis and mathematical analysis of computer modelling algorithms. It makes computer modellers aware of already established principles and results assembled in functional analysis.
