Book Trace Hydrocarbon Analysis

Download or read book Trace Hydrocarbon Analysis written by Stephen N. Chesler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trace Hydrocarbon Analysis: The National Bureau of Standards Prince William Sound/Northeastern Gulf of Alaska Baseline Study The purpose of this investigation was to develop analytical techniques adequate to determine the low levels of hydrocarbons anticipated in pollution baseline studies in pristine environments. These techniques were to be sensitive at the sub - microgram per kilogram (ppb) level and suitable to handle the paramount problems of analytical blanks and component recoveries. Furthermore, it was desired that these analytical methods would ultimately permit the identification and quantitation of individual components among the hydrocarbons present in the samples. To date several authors and groups have developed methods for the analysis of hydrocarbons in marine samples [1 These methods are of three basic types: a screening method for total extractable hydrocarbons [l]; a headspace analysis method specific for low molecular weight hydrocarbons and a method involving digestion or extraction of the sample followed by clean - up and concentration procedures and gas chromatographic analysis of the hydrocarbon components from the sample Careful evaluation of each of these three basic methods revealed certain limitations when considered in terms of the goals of this study. Download or read book Oil in the Sea written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume follows up and expands on an earlier National Academy of Sciences book. It is the result of an intensive multidisciplinary effort to assess the problems relating to petroleum-derived hydrocarbons in the marine environment. Specifically, it examines the inputs, analytical methods, fates, and effects of petroleum in the marine environment. The section on effects has been expanded significantly, reflecting the extensive scientific effort put forth in determining the effects of petroleum on marine organisms. Other topics discussed include petroleum contamination in specific geographical areas, the potential hazards of this contamination to human health, the impact of oil-related activities in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and the potential impact of petroleum on fisheries.

Book Methods of Seawater Analysis

Download or read book Methods of Seawater Analysis written by Klaus Grasshoff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the book first appeared in 1976, Methods of Seawater Analysis has found widespread acceptance as a reliable and detailed source of information. Its second extended and revised edition published in 1983 reflected the rapid pace of instrumental and methodological evolution in the preceding years. The development has lost nothing of its momentum, and many methods and procedures still suffering their teething troubles then have now matured into dependable tools for the analyst. This is especially evident for trace and ultra-trace analyses of organic and inorganic seawater constituents which have diversified considerably and now require more space for their description than before. Methods to determine volatile halocarbons, dimethyl sulphide, photosynthetic pigments and natural radioactive tracers have been added as well as applications of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and various electrochemical methods for trace metal analysis. Another method not previously described deals with the determination of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide as part of standardised procedures to describe the marine CO2 system.
