Download or read book The Hydrogen Economy written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The announcement of a hydrogen fuel initiative in the President's 2003 State of the Union speech substantially increased interest in the potential for hydrogen to play a major role in the nation's long-term energy future. Prior to that event, DOE asked the National Research Council to examine key technical issues about the hydrogen economy to assist in the development of its hydrogen R&D program. Included in the assessment were the current state of technology; future cost estimates; CO2 emissions; distribution, storage, and end use considerations; and the DOE RD&D program. The report provides an assessment of hydrogen as a fuel in the nation's future energy economy and describes a number of important challenges that must be overcome if it is to make a major energy contribution. Topics covered include the hydrogen end-use technologies, transportation, hydrogen production technologies, and transition issues for hydrogen in vehicles.

Book Enriched Methane

Download or read book Enriched Methane written by Marcello De Falco and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together recent research from across the world on enriched methane, and examines the production, distribution and use of this resource in internal combustion engines and gas turbines. It aims to provide readers with an extensive account of potential technological breakthroughs which have the capacity to revolutionize energy systems. Enriched methane, a gas mixture composed by methane and hydrogen (10-30%vol), constitutes the first realistic step towards the application of hydrogen as an energy vector. It provides strong benefits in terms of emissions reduction, that is -11% of CO2, eq emission with the combustion of a 30%vol H2 mixture, if hydrogen is produced from renewable energy sources. Enriched methane offers the following advantages:• it can be produced at competitive costs; • it can be distributed by means of the medium pressure natural gas grid;• it can be stored in traditional natural gas storage systems; • it can feed natural gas internal combustion engine, improving conversion efficiency. /divdivThis book is intended for academics in chemical engineering and energy production, distribution and storage. It is also intended for energy producers, engineering companies and R&D organizations./divdivbr

Book The Hype About Hydrogen

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph J. Romm
  • Publisher : Island Press
  • Release : 2013-04-10
  • ISBN : 1597266078
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book The Hype About Hydrogen written by Joseph J. Romm and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lately it has become a matter of conventional wisdom that hydrogen will solve many of our energy and environmental problems. Nearly everyone -- environmentalists, mainstream media commentators, industry analysts, General Motors, and even President Bush -- seems to expect emission-free hydrogen fuel cells to ride to the rescue in a matter of years, or at most a decade or two. Not so fast, says Joseph Romm. In The Hype about Hydrogen, he explains why hydrogen isn't the quick technological fix it's cracked up to be, and why cheering for fuel cells to sweep the market is not a viable strategy for combating climate change. Buildings and factories powered by fuel cells may indeed become common after 2010, Joseph Romm argues, but when it comes to transportation, the biggest source of greenhouse-gas emissions, hydrogen is unlikely to have a significant impact before 2050. The Hype about Hydrogen offers a hype-free explanation of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, takes a hard look at the practical difficulties of transitioning to a hydrogen economy, and reveals why, given increasingly strong evidence of the gravity of climate change, neither government policy nor business investment should be based on the belief that hydrogen cars will have meaningful commercial success in the near or medium term. Romm, who helped run the federal government's program on hydrogen and fuel cells during the Clinton administration, provides a provocative primer on the politics, business, and technology of hydrogen and climate protection.

Book Seasonal Energy Storage with Power to Methane Technology

Download or read book Seasonal Energy Storage with Power to Methane Technology written by Attila R. Imre and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a sustainable future, the need to use renewable sources to produce electricity is inevitable. Some of these sources-particularly the widely available solar power-are weather-dependent; therefore, utility-scale energy storage will be more and more important. These solar and wind power fluctuations range from minutes (passing cloud) to whole seasons (winter/summer differences). Short-term storage can be solved (at least theoretically) with batteries; however, seasonal storage-due to the amount of storable energy and the self-discharging of some storage methods-is still a challenge to be solved in the near future. We believe that biological Power-to-Methane technology-especially combined with biogas refinement-will be a significant player in the energy storage market within less than a decade. The technology produces high-purity methane, which can be considered-by using green energy and carbon dioxide of biological origin-as a Renewable Natural Gas, or RNG. The ease of storage and use of methane, as well as the effective carbon-freeness, can make it a competitor for batteries or hydrogen-based storage, especially for storage times exceeding several months.

Download or read book Advances in Renewable Hydrogen and Other Sustainable Energy Carriers written by Abdallah Khellaf and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a broad range of advances in hydrogen energy and alternative fuel developments and their role in the energy transition. The respective contributions were presented at the International Symposium on Sustainable Hydrogen, held in Algiers, Algeria on November 27-28, 2019. The transition from non-renewable polluting energy to sustainable green energy requires not only new energy sources but also new storage techniques and smart energy management. This situation has sparked renewed interest in hydrogen and alternative fuels, as they could help meet these needs. Indeed, hydrogen can not only be used as a clean energy vector or as an alternative fuel, but also as a storage medium or as an intermediary that enables improved energy management. This text offers a valuable reference guide for those working in the professional energy sector, as well as for students and instructors in academia who want to learn about the state of the art and future directions in the fields of hydrogen energy, alternative fuels and sustainable energy development.
