Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The themes discussed in this book, translated to English by Australian Kieran Tapsell, form part of a revolutionary discipline known under the name of evolutionary psychology, a discipline that has become the most powerful tool discovered to date for man to understand himself. Much of the knowledge revealed by human science is explained as a result of the evolutionary process, using as a premise the theory that the majority of modern man’s desires, impulses, interests and inclinations, and mental faculties were designed by the evolutionary process of the species. This new focus allows us to synthesize a group of already established findings, coming from such diverse disciplines as genetics, evolution, ethology, anthropology, psychology, neurology and epistemology. In this way, it is possible to explain an important part of complex human behavior under one sole, unifying principle: the direct or indirect search for a greater reproductive efficacy. With this work, easily readable by the general public, the author completes a cycle of subjects that he had begun with From the Big Bang to Homo Sapiens (2004), a book published in Spanish by Villegas Editores.

Book Practicing Philosophy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lydia Amir
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing

  • ISBN : 1443886599

Download or read book Practicing Philosophy written by Lydia Amir and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the state of the art of philosophical practice worldwide from the perspectives of leading philosophical practitioners, both counselors and institutional consultants. Philosophical practice has developed in different directions in different parts of the world, with the focus in Europe and North America being mostly on client counseling and corporate consultancy, while in Asia it is more community-based and more closely aligned with psychotherapy. In all cases, philosophical practitioners strive to transcend the boundaries of academic philosophy and reach out to the public, to corporations, to the policy makers, to the medical, legal and many other professions. The chapters of this book illustrate both the breadth of philosophical practice and its various methodological directions, while, at the same time, showing how philosophy can be relevant to everyday life, not just for individuals, but for the economy, the government, international organizations, the helping and therapeutic professions, and the educational system. The volume is primarily a companion for students of applied philosophy on all levels, as well as for modern psychotherapists, educational professionals and academics. It is designed to support a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in philosophy and applied psychology, ranging from ancient ethics to philosophical practice sui generis, or to the philosophy of psychology.

Book From language shift to language revitalization and sustainability

Download or read book From language shift to language revitalization and sustainability written by Albert Bastardas-Boada and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to contribute to the overall, integrated understanding of the processes of language contact and their evolution, be they the result of political or economic (dis)integrations or migrations or for technological reasons. Via an interdisciplinary, holistic approach, it also aims to support the theoretical grounding of a unified, common sociolinguistic paradigm, based on an ecological and complexity perspective. This approach built on the fact that linguistic structures do not live in isolation from their social functions and must be situated in relation to the sub-and supra-systems that determine their existence if we are to understand their fortunes. It is a useful contribution to understanding and promoting the processes of linguistic revitalization in the world, combining at the same time the maintenance and development of diversity while ensuring the intercommunication of human species.

Book Complexity Perspectives on Language Communication and Society

Download or read book Complexity Perspectives on Language Communication and Society written by Àngels Massip-Bonet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “language-communication-society” triangle defies traditional scientific approaches. Rather, it is a phenomenon that calls for an integration of complex, transdisciplinary perspectives, if we are to make any progress in understanding how it works. The highly diverse agents in play are not merely cognitive and/or cultural, but also emotional and behavioural in their specificity. Indeed, the effort may require building a theoretical and methodological body of knowledge that can effectively convey the characteristic properties of phenomena in human terms. New complexity approaches allow us to rethink our limited and mechanistic images of human societies and create more appropriate emo-cognitive dynamic and holistic models. We have to enter into dialogue with the complexity views coming out of other more ‘material’ sciences, but we also need to take steps in the linguistic and psycho-sociological fields towards creating perspectives and concepts better fitted to human characteristics. Our understanding of complexity is different – but not opposed – to the one that is more commonly found in texts written by people working in physics or computer science, for example. The goal of this book is to extend the knowledge of these other more ‘human’ or socially oriented perspectives on complexity, taking account of the language and communication singularities of human agents in society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a clear guide to Karol Wojtyla's principal philosophical work, Person and Act, rigorously analyzing the meaning that the author intended in his exposition. An important feature of the work is that the authors rely on the original Polish text, Osoba i czyn, as well as the best translations into Italian and Spanish, rather than on a flawed and sometimes misleading English edition of the work.
