Download or read book A Text Book of Insanity and Other Mental Diseases Classic Reprint written by Charles Arthur Mercier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Insanity and Other Mental Diseases This book was primarily intended for the use of students of medicine, as an introduction to the study of insanity, to give them a general notion of' the subject without going much into detail, and incidentally to be of use to them in examinations. In this object it succeeded so far that it became, I am told, the text-book in use in most of the Universities. It was not intended as an advanced book for those who make a special study of insanity, and in this respect also it has not disappointed its author, for the novel doctrines contained in it do not appear to have become known to them yet. Book Nervous and Mental Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nervous and Mental Diseases Classic Reprint written by Frederick Peterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nervous and Mental Diseases IT is the object of the author to bring together in the following chapters such matter in relation to the definition, classification, etiology, pathology, symptomatology, and treatment of insanity as will be of actual practical value to the medical student and general practitioner. The seeker after special information and deeper knowledge of the complex subject Of morbid psychology must be referred to the many profound works which deal with this exclusively. These chapters are based upon my clinical lectures given at the Manhattan State Hospital for the Insane and at the Randall's Island Asylum for Idiots during the past four or five years, to the students of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, and to the students of the Woman's Medical College of the New York Infirmary. They, there fore, embody only the facts which I believe to be the most serviceable and useful to those who are often practically concerned with the early diagnosis and prognosis of insanity, and who must be the first arbiters as to the course Of care and treatment to be pursued. Book A Text Book on Mental Diseases

Download or read book A Text Book on Mental Diseases written by Theodore H. Kellogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book on Mental Diseases: For the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The Science of Mental Diseases advances so rapidly that there is no apology needed for new treatises. All modern English, French, and German hooks on the subject have proved highly instructive, and have served to educate the profession in a most important branch of medical knowledge. An endeavor is here made to set forth in a condensed but comprehensive manner the present state of the Science of Mental Diseases. The book is made to embrace the wide range of the history, statistics, nosology, etiology, clinical course, symptomatology, pathology, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of Mental Disorders. An attempt has been made to introduce such clear and systematic subdivisions as would best tend to facilitate the comprehension of the whole subject and render the work available for students and practitioners of medicine. The book aims to be a practical guide to the diagnosis and treatment of all the various types of Insanity with which the physician has to deal in public hospitals or private practice, and also to serve as a work of ready reference for psychiatrists, in the emergencies of their specialty. Parts of the treatise may merit the attention of psychologists and of all interested in the study of mental pathology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Diseases: A Handbook Dealing With Diagnosis and Classification Recent readjustment in certain mental groupings and their nomenclature gives a special interest to those terms which are coming into common use. The short chapters put under this cover undertake a statement as to the data essential in the recognition of the different psychoses. The forms of mental disease mentioned follow modern usage. The first chapter gives the classification now accepted for use in the War Department, and recommended for general adoption throughout the United States. However, the order of presentation belongs to the author, and is intended to put first those disorders that are most frequent, allowing the other divisions to be placed in suitable chapters. In this writing, aside from the direct observation of hospital patients, I have studied the subject as given in various texts, particularly those of Kraepelin, Dercum, Tanzi, Diefendorf, White, and Jelliffe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiognomy of Mental Diseases The appearance of the face is intimately connected with and dependant upon the state of the mind; the repetition of the same ideas and emotions, and the consequent repetition of the same movements of the muscles of the eyes and of the face give a peculiar expression, which, in the insane state, is a combination of wildness, abstraction, or vacancy, and of those ideas and emotions characterising different varieties of mental disorder, as pride, anger, suspicion, mirth, love, fear. Book A Clinical Manual of Mental Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Clinical Manual of Mental Diseases Classic Reprint written by Francis X. Dercum and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Clinical Manual of Mental Diseases The generous reception accorded the first edition of this manual justifies the inference that a purely clinical presentation of mental disease fulfils a distinct want. The practising physician has too often looked upon insanity as a subject unattractive and obscure, difficult and abstruse, and with which, because of the speculative and metaphysical character of its theories and explanations, he has no immediate concern. The truth is, however, that when viewed from the standpoint of internal medicine it is brought into close and intimate relations with the latter. This becomes especially evident when we realize that many cases of mental disease have their origin in infections and intoxications, while others present problems which are essentially those of disorders of metabolism. Many of the latter have to do with profound nutritional disturbances which have their origin in defensive reactions of the organism to intoxications. Such intoxications may arise from without or, it may be, from within the organism. Among the latter are toxic states due to abnormalities of the various glands of internal secretion or of other structures. In other cases of mental disease, again, the physician has to do with aberrancies and arrests of development, with peculiarities of structure and mental organization often hereditary; and in each of these there are, again, the added and largely unsolved problems of toxic metabolism. Finally, in given instances, the mental symptoms are in relation with gross visceral or bodily disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Text Book of Mental Diseases

Download or read book A Text Book of Mental Diseases written by William Bevan Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Mental Diseases: With Special Reference to the Pathological Aspects of Insanity It has, however, been my special object to present a resume of our knowledge of the structure and connections of the cerebro-spinal nervous system, of the architecture of the cerebral hemispheres, and more especially of the cortical envelope as the essential organ - the material substratum - of Mind; and to afford a concise account of the morbid changes found in the brain of the insane, as viewed in the light of recent research. It appears to me that a disproportionate amount of attention has been paid in former text-books to the clinical aspects of Insanity, and it is hoped that this attempt to deal more fully with the organisation of the material substratum of mind, and with the evidences of morbid change to which it is prone, will not prove unwelcome to the Student of Mental Disease. In the Anatomical Section, I have endeavoured to comprise such information as shall prove of utility to a more thorough conception of the ground-plan and superstructure of the nervous system; and it will be at once evident that special emphasis has been advisedly bestowed upon the cortical envelope - the structure, nature, and autonomy of the nerve-cell.viii preface. The Clinical Section comprises statistics based upon an analysis of cases of Insanity in both sexes, treated at the West Riding Asylum. In the Pathological Section, I have endeavoured to do justice to certain morbid processes, which appear to me to be of paramount importance in the history of Insanity; and more particularly would I here allude to the functions of the Lymph connective system of the Brain, and the life-history of the Scavenger-cell.
