Finally the matter was brought to an issue in the course Of several public debates in Zurich between 1523 and 1525 with Zwingli taking the lead in favor of a conservative establishment, and like the old Church kept inpower by the temporal authorities; and Conrad Grebel, Felix Mantz, George Blaurock and several others contending for a free church entirely disassociated from all political authority. Book Architecture and Artifacts of the Pennsylvania Germans Constructing Identity in Early America

Download or read book Architecture and Artifacts of the Pennsylvania Germans Constructing Identity in Early America written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a mid-eighteenth-century group, the so-called Pennsylvania Germans, build their cultural identity in the face of ethnic stereotyping, nostalgic ideals, and the views imposed by outside contemporaries? Numerous forces create a group's identity, including the views of outsiders, insiders, and the shaping pressure of religious beliefs, but to understand the process better, we must look to clues from material culture. Cynthia Falk explores the relationship between ethnicity and the buildings, personal belongings, and other cultural artifacts of early Pennsylvania German immigrants and their descendants. Such material culture has been the basis of stereotyping Pennsylvania Germans almost since their arrival. Falk warns us against the typical scholarly overemphasis on Pennsylvania Germans' assimilation into an English way of life. Rather, she demonstrates that more than anything, socioeconomic status and religious affiliation influenced the character of the material culture of Pennsylvania Germans. Her work also shows how early Pennsylvania Germans defined their own identities.

Book excerpt: In 'Twas Seeding Time, author John L. Ruth gives readers some little-known insights concerning Mennonite community life in America 200 years ago. On the eve of the Revolution, nearly a century after the first Mennonite settlers arrived in Pennsylvania, these formerly oppressed Swiss-Germans were enjoying the liberties of the Quaker Commonwealth. Their small farms, laboriously carved out of "Penn's Woods," provided an adequate livelihood, and their simple meetinghouses showed the reality of the religious freedom so often denied them in Europe. While their belief in love and nonresistance was tested at times in their contacts with the Indians, they dwelt in peace and contentment under the British crown and the sympathetic Quaker government of Pennsylvania. But the real trial of faith came with the rising sentiment of rebellion in the colonies. Following the first battles of the Revolution in Massachusetts during the spring of 1775, the martial spirit spread to Pennsylvania. All able-bodied men came under pressure to respond to the call to arms, or if conscience prevented that, to contribute liberally of their means to the patriots' cause. Thus, whether in the eighteenth century or the twentieth, American Mennonites have found it difficult to remain uncompromised in their relation to government. John L. Ruth's lively account is far more than a collection of interesting stories and anecdotes. It provides a fine historical perspective to help us evaluate our role in American society today. - Robert M. Schrag, Mennonite Weekly Review, on back cover.

Book Mennonite Piety Through the Centuries

Download or read book Mennonite Piety Through the Centuries written by Robert Friedmann and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 1999-02-16 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of two studies: ÒAnabaptism and PietismÓ and ÒMennonite Devotional Literature 1600-1800Ó. The first study gives the general historical analysis, the second provides Friedmann's concrete proof of his thesis. The first treatise puts the question of the Holy Spirit into the center of the discussion, as Friedemann believes that this question is more decisive for the pattern of living Christianity than doctrinal issues. The second treatise attempts to depict the spiritual life in its variform expression showing how the Holy Spirit, or that which sometimes is taken for Him, operates.

Book William Penn and the Dutch Quaker Migration to Pennsylvania

Download or read book William Penn and the Dutch Quaker Migration to Pennsylvania written by William Isaac Hull and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1970 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic study Dr. Hull explores the historic background to the Dutch Quaker migration and William Penn's mission to Holland and Germany in 1677, which has been credited with touching off the large Dutch and German emigration to Pennsylvania. The movement began, of course, with the Krefelders' settlement led by Francis Daniel Pastorius at Germantown in 1683. Hull's scholarly study of the Dutch Quaker immigration to Pennsylvania (and incidentally the German Quaker immigration) contains a number of appendices that give the names of all the settlers in Germantown during the years 1683-1709, with brief genealogical notices, including place of origin. These settlers originated from places as diverse as Holland, Germany, Finland, Hungary, Silesia, Switzerland, Transylvania, and Great Britain. Other appendices include names from a 1693 tax list and names of Germantown residents naturalized in 1691 and 1709. The author gives both the Dutch and the German forms of the names cited.
