Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller! In The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer, singer-songwriter, actor, fashion icon, futurist, and worldwide superstar Janelle Monáe brings to the written page the Afrofuturistic world of one of her critically acclaimed albums, exploring how different threads of liberation—queerness, race, gender plurality, and love—become tangled with future possibilities of memory and time in such a totalitarian landscape…and what the costs might be when trying to unravel and weave them into freedoms. Whoever controls our memories controls the future. Janelle Monáe and an incredible array of talented collaborators have crafted a collection of tales comprising the bold vision and powerful themes that have made Monáe such a compelling and celebrated storyteller. Dirty Computer introduced a world in which thoughts—as a means of self-conception—could be controlled or erased by a select few. And whether you were human, AI, or other, your life and sentience were dictated by those who’d convinced themselves they had the right to decide your fate. That was until Jane 57821 decided to remember and break free. Expanding from that mythos, these stories fully explore what it’s like to live in such a totalitarian society . . . and what it takes to get out of it. Building off the tradition of speculative fiction writers such as Octavia E. Butler, Ted Chiang, Becky Chambers, and Nnedi Okorafor—and filled with powerful themes and Monáe’s emblematic artistic vision—The Memory Librarian serves to readers tales that dissect the human trials of identity expression, technology, and love, reaching through to the worlds of memory and time, and the stakes and power that pulse there.

This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Memory Days of the Church in America When, on St. J olm's Day In 1497, Jolm Cabot, coming upon the Labrador coast, discovered for the world the continent of America, he carried with him in his English ship some minister of the English Church (un-reformed) and when he planted on the barren shore the banner of England, almost certainly the prayers of the Church were said for the first time in America. And when John's son, Sebastian Cabot, in the reign of the young Edward VI., sailed in 1553 to discover places unknown, with him went Master Richard Stafford, minister of the Church of England, who daily read Morning and Evening Prayer, and the other Church services which were strictly enjoined. In the name and fear of God, the explorers put forth on the unknown seas, carry ing with them the Body and Blood of Christ as their viaticum, and the last home words that they heard were the prayers of the Church. The cross with the arms of England marked their discoveries, and on their way, north to the ice, south to the boundaries of the globe, and west to the broad rivers and inland seas of the New World the prayers of the English Church were said daily' 3 and the Old log-books and charters mention the desire of the sailors to carry the Word of God to these very mighty, vast countries. Book Presidential Temples

Download or read book Presidential Temples written by Benjamin Hufbauer and published by CultureAmerica. This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the visual and material cultures of presidential commemoration--memorials and monuments, libraries and archives--and the problematic ways in which presidents themselves have largely taken over their own commemoration. The author sees these various commemorative sites as playing a key role in the construction of our collective political and cultural self-images and as another sign of our preoccupation with celebrity culture. Ultimately, he contends, these presidential temples reflect not only our civil religion but also the extraordinary expansion of executive authority--and presidential self-commemoration--since FDR.

Book Handbook of Categorization in Cognitive Science

Download or read book Handbook of Categorization in Cognitive Science written by Henri Cohen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-06-03 with total page 1277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Categorization in Cognitive Science, Second Edition presents the study of categories and the process of categorization as viewed through the lens of the founding disciplines of the cognitive sciences, and how the study of categorization has long been at the core of each of these disciplines. The literature on categorization reveals there is a plethora of definitions, theories, models and methods to apprehend this central object of study. The contributions in this handbook reflect this diversity. For example, the notion of category is not uniform across these contributions, and there are multiple definitions of the notion of concept. Furthermore, the study of category and categorization is approached differently within each discipline. For some authors, the categories themselves constitute the object of study, whereas for others, it is the process of categorization, and for others still, it is the technical manipulation of large chunks of information. Finally, yet another contrast has to do with the biological versus artificial nature of agents or categorizers. Defines notions of category and categorization Discusses the nature of categories: discrete, vague, or other Explores the modality effects on categories Bridges the category divide - calling attention to the bridges that have already been built, and avenues for further cross-fertilization between disciplines

Book Person Memory PLE Memory

Download or read book Person Memory PLE Memory written by Reid Hastie and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980, this title came about after many late night discussions between the authors during a 3-week workshop on Mathematical Approaches to Person Perception in 1974. In subsequent meetings a mutual interest emerged in the development of cognitive information processing metaphors for human thought and their application to problems of social perception, memory and judgment. Within the context of modern research on social cognition, the most distinctive aspects of the authors’ work was its empirical focus on how people cognitively represent people in memory, and its theoretical emphasis on models of cognitive organization and process. They concluded that an adequate theory of social memory was the necessary foundation for solutions to many questions concerning social perception and judgment that had dominated the 1974 workshop. This volume summarizes work conducted between 1974 and 1979 on social memory by these authors. In addition to six chapters summarizing individual research programs, the volume includes a general introduction and a concluding theoretical integration.

Book Memory s Library

  • ISBN : 0226781720
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Memory s Library written by Jennifer Summit and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jennifer Summit’s account, libraries are more than inert storehouses of written tradition; they are volatile spaces that actively shape the meanings and uses of books, reading, and the past. Considering the two-hundred-year period between 1431, which saw the foundation of Duke Humfrey’s famous library, and 1631, when the great antiquarian Sir Robert Cotton died, Memory’s Library revises the history of the modern library by focusing on its origins in medieval and early modern England. Summit argues that the medieval sources that survive in English collections are the product of a Reformation and post-Reformation struggle to redefine the past by redefining the cultural place, function, and identity of libraries. By establishing the intellectual dynamism of English libraries during this crucial period of their development, Memory’s Library demonstrates how much current discussions about the future of libraries can gain by reexamining their past.
