This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fox's Book of Martyrs, or the Acts and Monuments of the Christian Church: Being a Complete History of the Lives, Sufferings, and Deaths of the Christian Martyrs; From the Commencement of Christianity to the Present Period; To Which Is Added an Account of the Inquisition The next martyr we ineet with, according to St. Luke, in the History of the Apostles' Acts, was James the son of Zebedee, the elder brother of John, and a relative of our Lord; for his mother Salome was cousin-genrian to the Virgin Mary. They were men of warm tempers, and, therefore, surnamed Bo anerges by Christ; yet these two and Peter had the more special confidence of our Saviour, and were on that account objects of unreasonable caution. It was not until ten years after the death of Stephen, that the second martyrdom took place; for no sooner had Herod A 'p pa been appointed governor of J udaaa, Elan, with a view to ingratiate himself with them, he raised a sharp persecution against the Christians, and determined to make an effec tual blow, by striking at their leaders. James, as an active propagator of the gospel, was the first object of his zeal, and he condemned him to death with little ceremony, and ordered him to be executed without delay. The account given us by an eminent primitive writer, Cle mens Alexandrinus, ought not to be overlooked; that, as James was led to the place of mm tyrdom, his accuser-was brought to repent of his conduct by the apostle's extraordinary courage and undauntedness, and fell down at his feet to request his pardon, professing him self a Christian, and resolving that James should not receive the crown of martyrdom alone. Hence they were both beheaded at the same time. Thus did the first apostolic martyr cheer fully and resolutely receive that cup, which he had told our Saviour he was ready to drink. Book excerpt: FOXS BOOK OF MARTYRS- A HISTORY OF THE LIVES, SUFFERINGS AND TRIUMPHANT DEATHS OF THE EARLY CHRISTIAN AND THE PROTESTANT MARTYRS Edited by WILLIAM BYRON FORBUSH. Originally published in 1926. FOXS BOOK OF MARTYRS: When one recollects that until the appearance of the Pilgrims Progress the common people had almost no other reading matter except the Bible and Foxs Book of Martyrs, we can understand the deep impression that this book produced and how it served to mold the national character. Those who could read for themselves learned the full details of all the atrocities performed on the Protes tant reformers the illiterate could see the rude illustrations of the various instruments of torture, the rack, the gridiron, the boiling oil, and then the holy ones breathing out their souls amid the flames. Take a people just awakening to a new intellectual and religious life let several generations of them, from childhood to old age, pore over such a book, and its stories become traditions as individual and almost as potent as songs and customs on a nations life DOUGLAS CAMPBELL, The Puritan in Holland, England, and America. c If we divest the book of its accidental character of feud between churches, it yet stands, in the first years of Elizabeths reign, a mon ument that marks the growing strength of a desire for spiritual freedom, defiance of those forms that seek to stifle conscience and fetter thought HENRY MORLEY, English Writers. After the Bible itself, no book so profoundly influenced early-Protestant sentiment as the Book of Martyrs. Even in our own time it is still a living force. It is more than a record of persecution. It is an arsenal of controversy, a storehouse of romance, as well as a source of edification. JAMES MILLER DODDS, English Prose.
