Wearing the white flower of a blameless life Before a thousand peering littlenesses." George David Cummins was born near the town of Smyrna, Del., December nth, 1822. His fathers family came to this country from Scotland, and settled at Oxford, near Easton, Md., on the Chesapeake Bay. It was at that time a shipping port of importance. From Oxford several members of the family removed to Delaware and Pennsylvania. Two of the uncles of the subject of this memoir settled in Philadelphia, and became prominent shipping and commission merchants. The father of Bishop Cummins, Mr. George Cummins, purchased land in Delaware, and there he lived all his life. He occupied prominent positions in the State, and was a member of the Legislature for many years. Early in life he married the daughter of Governor Collins. Book excerpt: The correspondence by and about this militant Low Church-leader is chiefly from himself and others to Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. It includes material concerning his work in Trinity Parish, Washington, D.C., 1854-1857, and rectorship of St. Peter's Church, Baltimore, 1858-1862. Some printed sermons on slavery, the Civil War, and other topics are included. Subsequent papers relate to Cummins's transfer to Trinity Church, Chicago, 1863; election as Assistant Bishop of Kentucky, 1866; his conduct while in office; and episcopal services which he performed for Bishop Whittingham in Maryland, 1867. Some letters concern a dispute with Bishop Henry J. Whitehouse and troubles in the Diocese of Illinois. There are substantial holdings on the schism in the Protestant Episcopal Church brought about by Cummins, his renunciation of the Episcopal ministry, his deposition, 1874, his influence in Virginia and attraction for Methodists, and the founding of the Reformed Episcopal Church.
