Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Archbishop Temple, Vol. 2 of 2 Bishop Jackson's death and episcopate - Enthronement and earliest functions - Election of rural deans - Primary conference of the London clergy and laity - Relations with the London clergy. On the Feast of the Epiphany, 1885, Bishop Jackson died, after an episcopate in London of sixteen years. Two days before, he had preached his last sermon at St. Paul's; then there was one warning day at Fulham, at the close of which (to use Dean Church's words) "he lay down to sleep and slept into the Unseen World," feliae opportunitate mortis; one of the most earnest wishes of his heart having been that he might "be saved from being a cumberer of the ground." Greater as an administrator than as an originator, no prelate had lived more earnestly for his diocese or had a more thorough knowledge of its requirements. Many as are the qualities which go to make a successful Bishop of London, they were almost all, in the then present condition of ecclesiastical polities, subordinate to a settled determination to promote the peace of the Church. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Archbishop Temple, Vol. 1 of 2 In order that each contributor may give of his best, he has been left as free as possible, consistently with the limitations of the work, to tell his own tale. A certain amount of overlapping has been the inevitable consequence; it is hoped that the price of the additional freedom will be judged worth the payment. The result may remind readers somewhat of an old building in which many styles are mingled together without much attempt on the part of successive builders to make them fit into each other. The general effect is, however, sometimes fine; the building creates its own symmetry; it grows into unity of itself, and perhaps Archbishop Temple may be left to speak for himself; he is his own epistle, known and read of all men. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Church of England, Vol. 2 of 2: Indicated in Selections From the Writings of Eminent Divines; With Memoirs of Their Lives, and Historical Sketches of the Times in Which They Lived Again, others Of the clergy, without holding any prefer ment, were connived at, in the capacity of preachers or lecturers some conspicuous instances Of this connivance took place towards the close Of Cromwell's career, when the usurper had adopted a more tolerant policy. Thus we have seen Ussher Officiating in the pulpit at Lincoln's Inn, and elsewhere; thus also the venerable Brownrigg, deprived bishop Of Exeter, was preacher at the Temple. At this period likewise, a congregation Of' loyalists met in Oxford; another was regularly kept up in Fleet Street, by Dr. George Wilde, afterwards bishop Of' Londonderry; while Pearson, raised, at the Restoration, to the see of Chester, delivered the substance of his Emposition of the Creed at St. Clement's Church in East Cheap. The bishops, meantime, continued to provide for the succession of the regular ministry, by secret ordination of such young scholars of distinguished piety and attainments, as were willing to strengthen the clerical ranks. Infithis service, Bishop Hall, and Skinner, bishop Of Oxford, took an active part. By a beautiful arrangement of Providence, overruling all events to the furtherance Of the divine purposes, some Of the holiest and most profoundly learned Of the clergy of the next age received imposition of hands from those venerable fathers, at a time when that branch of Christ's Catholic Church, to whose service they vowed themselves, lay prostrate in ruin and proscription, beneath the iron heel Of military despotism, and the insulting hoof of sectarian bigotry.
