The scenes of cruelty, carnage, and assassination which followed, never entered into the perspective which the citizens traced in their minds, as they laboured for that work which they flattered themselves would be the consolidation of their political happiness. At sunset the signal for departure was given, and the Parisians, forming themselves into different companies, according to the sections to which they belonged, returned to their respective homes, each imagining that he had that day been performing the part of a patriot, and that he had been discharging a duty that was incumbent upon him. All retired satisfied with themselves, I 122 GRAND PROCESSION. and pleased with their neighbours and fellow-labourers. Happy illusion! Pity that it could not have longer endured. But if the preparatory operations presented a gay and animated scene, what words can describe the wonderful and beautiful-spectacle which the day itself displayed? Madame Tussaud observes, that it is impossible for the imagination to form to itself any adequate idea of the enthusiastic development of joy which seemed to pervade all Paris. Amongst other objects which composed the immense procession, were three triumphal cars, the first containing the goddess of Liberty, personated by a lady of respectability, and not, .as often erroneously stated, a prostitute; the female selected was one whose figure ( was commanding, and who possessed a fine countenance, and dignified appearance; the car was ornamented with symbolic devices. The next which followed contained the figure of Voltaire, and afterwards followed that of Rosseau, the federate authorities of the provinces, with those of the army, each.

During her 6 month imprisonment she wrote these memoirs. This is the first modern English translation. Approximately half of the pages concern the author's upbringing in a Parisian bourgeois family and her marriage to the bureaucrat Jean-Marie Roland de la Platiere; the remainder discusses the period from 1789 to 1793, when she and her husband were leaders of the Girondin party. Madame Roland was devoted to her spouse and always gave him full credit for work in which she was a full partner, including the inspection of manufacturers under the Old Regime and the post of minister of the interior during parts of 1792 and 1793. Her memoirs provide glimpses into the daily life of the period and sharp portraits of several revolutionary leaders. Scholars will wish to consult the complete French edition, but this book is perfect for general readers.

The moderates, alarmed by divisions, hoped that the common danger would put an end to them, and that the fields cciving that changes in the constitution, that violation of the equality which is the basis of it, were the sole aim of the enemies of France; that they wished to punish her for having recognised in their full extent the rights common to all mankind; and then it took that oath, repeated by all Frenchmen, to perish rather than suffer the slightest attack either upon the liberty of the citizens, or upon the sovereignty of the people; or, above all, upon that equality without which there exists for societies neither justice nor happiness. Would they reproach the French with not having sufficiently respected the rights of other nations, in offering only pecuniary indemnities either to the German princes holding possessions in Alsace, or to the Pope ? Treaties had acknowledged the sovereignty of France over Alsace, and it had been peaceably exercised there for upwards of a century. The rights which these treaties had reserved were but privileges; the meaning of this reserve therefore was, that the possessors of fiefs in Alsace should retain them, with their old prerogatives, so long as the general lawa of'France admitted of the different forms of feudalism; that reserve signified also that, if the feudal prerogatives were involved in one general ruin, the nation ought to indemnify the possessors for the real advantages resulting from it: for this is all that the right of property can demand, when it happens to be in opposition to the law, in contradiction to the publio interest. The citizens of Alsace are Frenchmen, and the nation cannot without disgrace and without injustice suffer them to be deprived...
