Book excerpt: In Skipjack, Christopher White spends a pivotal year with three memorable captains as they battle man and nature to control the fate of their island villages and oyster fleet. Through these lively characters, White paints a vivid picture of life on a skip - jack, a wooden oystering sailboat as they dredge for oysters—a favorite staple of iconic American seafood cuisine for over a hundred years. But this last vestige of American sailing culture is rapidly dying. State officials have mismanaged the waters, putting sport above business, and modernization above tradition. These captains must set aside their rivalry to fight for their very livelihood. With so many obstacles, it is not certain the fleet will survive the season. Hinging on its success, the viability of the nation's premiere estuary and the survival of a classic American town hang dangerously in the balance.

Book No Time to Reef

Download or read book No Time to Reef written by C.R. Webster and published by . This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the Maryland State Ship, the Skipjack. They are working boats that work on the Chesapeake Bay. They were first built in the late 1800's with a fleet of 1500. Now there are less than 25. These Skipjacks dredge for oysters or "drudge" as the Captains call it. They make their living dredging and I never knew what hard work was involved or the upkeep expenses which explains why many ships are no longer working vessels. The scenes are centered on the Tangier Sound, where I was raised. My Dad and grandfather were waterman. My Dad had a severe injury on the Claude Somers, captained by Captain Zack Taylor, when his arm got caught in the winders that pull of the dredges that drag the bottom of the Bay. He survived but was unable to work on the water. I still remember that day. There are many small chapters in this book, information taken directly from surviving captains or their families. Each year the Skipjacks race in the Deal Island Chance Lion's Clubs Annual Skipjack Races. The Skipjacks are as old as 100 years. One of the Captains is 91 and the youngest is 41. They told me tales of close calls, of blinding storms and ice treachery. I found it to be fascinating, a heritage passed on to their families. This book is a keepsake for them to have forever.

Book Shucked

  • Author : Erin Byers Murray
  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press
  • Release : 2011-10-11
  • ISBN : 1429989092
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Shucked written by Erin Byers Murray and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Buford's Heat meets Phoebe Damrosch's Service Included in this unique blend of personal narrative, food miscellany, and history In March of 2009, Erin Byers Murray ditched her pampered city girl lifestyle and convinced the rowdy and mostly male crew at Island Creek Oysters in Duxbury, Massachusetts, to let a completely unprepared, aquaculture-illiterate food and lifestyle writer work for them for a year to learn the business of oysters. The result is Shucked—part love letter, part memoir and part documentary about the world's most beloved bivalves. Providing an in-depth look at the work that goes into getting oysters from farm to table, Shucked shows Erin's fullcircle journey through the modern day oyster farming process and tells a dynamic story about the people who grow our food, and the cutting-edge community of weathered New England oyster farmers who are defying convention and looking ahead. The narrative also interweaves Erin's personal story—the tale of how a technology-obsessed workaholic learns to slow life down a little bit and starts to enjoy getting her hands dirty (and cold). This is a book for oyster lovers everywhere, but also a great read for locavores and foodies in general.

In a new afterword for this edition, Horton brings the story of Smith Island, and its people, up to the present.

Book Reclaiming The Woods A Memoir of Healing

Download or read book Reclaiming The Woods A Memoir of Healing written by John S. Munday and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a love story. It is a journey through horrendous grief, traveling through unbelievable shock to a destination of giving, sharing love in the way it is supposed to be--universal. When I read Marlys in Heaven some time ago, my heart was deeply touched. This book is what was done with those memories. How does our culture see love? Romantic, and certainly, this was a huge part of recovery. Love is vast. I'm reminded of my high school motto: Amor Vincit Omnia. Love conquers all. When I read on, I realized that these two amazing people took that pain and, together with their faith, did so much to bring love to the less fortunate. They didn't just accept the churches' teachings; they examined who would touch their hearts and souls to do so much for Marlys's memory. It is that love that sustains them to this day. Overcoming is not the same as getting over. Simply, that beloved daughter will always remain the Grand Canyon of their hearts as they continue on their spiritual path. It seems to me they have planted beautiful flowers in that canyon in memory of the lovely Marlys. In their case, there is a strong practical aspect. The reality is that people are suffering all over the world. Fran and John have done so much to alleviate that condition. I am writing the effect this book had on me. Nothing I say will do it justice. It is a must-read for all. Not only does it highlight the huge risks they had to take, the decisions they made, the disappointment, setbacks, joys. It is a testament to Marlys, who turned grief into intense love and commitment. I am reminded of a tapestry that hangs on my office door from the Dalai Lama: This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples. No need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples. My philosophy is kindness. This is how I see Fran and John. They have taken what was the unthinkable and made it into a vibrant memorial to the beautiful Marlys. This is the sentence that summed it all up for me: "When driving along the Saint Croix River Fran said... 'I miss Marlys but I have my memories. I need to live with what I have now. Just keep driving.'" So that's what they did and are still doing--driving on. Yvonne Kaye, PhD, MSC www.yvonnekayewisdom.com
