Book Imperial Hearst

Download or read book Imperial Hearst written by Ferdinand Lundberg and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearst’s journalistic ethics were probably never more clearly exposed than during the national election campaign of 1936. It is true that eighty per cent of the newspapers in the United States spread slanders and calumnies against the President. But the Hearst organs pulled all the stops and thundered vilification with all the resources at their command. The President was portrayed as a lunatic, a wastrel arid a cartoonist’s version of a frothing Communist. Picture and text described him and his advisers as dangerously radical, malicious and altogether feeble-minded. The Hearst press did not hesitate to attribute the source of Roosevelt’s social legislation to Moscow. Nor did consistency deter Hearst from charging plagiarism from Hitler and Mussolini. His newspapers shouted denunciation and abuse. Sound familiar? This work is the only complete exposition of the financial, political and social results of the career of William Randolph Hearst.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 29, 1681, a band of English buccaneers that had been terrorizing Spanish possessions on the west coast of the Americas captured a Spanish ship, from which they obtained a derrotero, or book of charts and sailing directions. When they arrived back in England, the Spanish ambassador demanded that the buccaneers be brought to trial. The derrotero was ordered to be brought to King Charles II, who apparently appreciated its great intelligence value. The buccaneers were acquitted, to the chagrin of the king of Spain, who had the English ambassador expelled from the court at Madrid on a seemingly trumped-up charge. The derrotero was subsequently translated, and one of the buccaneers, Basil Ringrose, added a text to the compilation and information to the Spanish charts. The resulting atlas, consisting of 106 pages of charts and 106 pages of text, is published in full for the first time in this volume. Covering the coast from California to Tierra del Fuego, the Galapagos, and Juan Fernandes, Basil Ringrose's south sea waggoner is a rich source of geographical information, with observations on navigational, physical, biological, and cultural features as well as on ethnography, customs, and folklore. After almost exactly three hundred years, this secret atlas is now made available to libraries and individuals. The editors have provided an extensive introduction on historical, geographical, and navigational aspects of the atlas, as well as annotations to the charts and text, and they have plotted the coverage of the charts on modern map bases. Book Long Night of the Tankers

Download or read book Long Night of the Tankers written by David Jay Bercuson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Night of the Tankers presents a fresh account of a critical but often overlooked component of the Atlantic naval theatre in World War II. Using war diaries, after-action reports, and first-hand accounts, authors Bercuson and Herwig examine the story behind Operation Neuland, the German plan to prevent vital oil supplies reaching the United States and the United Kingdom from key refineries in the Caribbean. Starting in February 1942 with the initial German success in choking the oil supply to the Allied war machine, Long Night of the Tankers details the planning and execution of German operations and the subsequent diplomatic, political, and military responses of the Allies that ultimately overcame the German effort and transformed the Caribbean shipping lanes into a death trap for German U-boats.

Book The Revolt of the Cockroach People

Download or read book The Revolt of the Cockroach People written by Oscar Zeta Acosta and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The further adventures of “Dr. Gonzo” as he defends the “cucarachas”— the Chicanos of East Los Angeles. One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years Before his mysterious disappearance and probable death in 1971, Oscar Zeta Acosta was famous as a Robin Hood Chicano lawyer and notorious as the real-life model for Hunter S. Thompson's "Dr. Gonzo" a fat, pugnacious attorney with a gargantuan appetite for food, drugs, and life on the edge. In this exhilarating sequel to The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, Acosta takes us behind the front lines of the militant Chicano movement of the late sixties and early seventies, a movement he served both in the courtroom and on the barricades. Here are the brazen games of "chicken" Acosta played against the Anglo legal establishment; battles fought with bombs as well as writs; and a reluctant hero who faces danger not only from the police but from the vatos locos he champions. What emerges is at once an important political document of a genuine popular uprising and a revealing, hilarious, and moving personal saga.
