Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of studies and compositions written to provide a creative approach to a common problem. Most guitar students have not worked through a methodical approach to reading music notation, which limits their personal progress and sometimes their career development. the author has approached the studies from two directions: horizontal, or up the fingerboard on individual strings, and positional. the first two parts of the book are extensively fingered and designed to make intervals and melodic patterns more visually apparent by repetition of similar ideas in different locations on the neck. the third part contains five extended compositions, which draw from the author's jazz background. the first four include chord changes for duo practice, as well as challenging melodic lines in a variety of meters that may be used for the study of improvisation. the fifth piece is written in the Indian Raga style. Basic music theory and rhythmic studies are included in the appendices.

Book excerpt: These twenty-one studies present a variety of melodic themes composed to provide enhancement of technique. I wanted to write short, playable pieces designed to build fluency and coordination between the left and right hand. I also wanted these technical studies to contain melodic elements sufficient to allow them to be used as short pieces in concert or recital. As valuable as scalepractice can be, it can also be tedious. I wanted these studies to be fun to play. I also utilized a variety of major and minor keys and composed the pieces specifically to explore the contrast between open and fingered strings. Finally, these studies will help enable the guitarist to move freely between variouspositions on the fingerboard. In Notation and Tablature

Book 65 Gradually Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies

Download or read book 65 Gradually Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies written by Ferdinando Carulli and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 65 pieces and 6 etudes are originally found in Ferdinando Carulli's Complete Method for the Guitar, op. 241. This method is the last iteration of his original guitar method (op. 27), the first modern method for guitar. Originally published as 44 Progressive Pieces and 6 Studies, the present edition (based on an edition published by Oliver Ditson Company, Boston) in fact yields the following: 56 numbered studies, 2 slur studies, 1 rondo for all positions, 4 intervalstudies, 2 studies in harmonics and the 6 (rather didactic) etudes. (Not included in the present volume are numerous short scale exercises and cadences. These can be found in more complete and thorough treatments in numerous modern methods.) These studies clearly demonstrate Carulli's familiarity with his Italian operatic heritage. They are nearly all in recognizable song forms and the compositional style is simple melody with harmonic accompaniment. Counterpoint is almost totally absent. Yet within these limits Carulli creates very fine music indeed.Great care was taken to make this a performing edition. All of the pieces fit on 1 or 2 pages. The few that take 3 pages have page turns inserted in logical places. The few fingerings presented are found in the Ditson edition and are logical and obvious. It is hoped that these pieces will present a delightful anduseful supplement to the studies of Sor and Giuliani published during the same period. They are truly progressive; the first 10 or so are in the keys of C, G or D (and their relative minors), all in first position, using mostly tonic and dominant harmony and can be learned by most students in just a few lessons. They continue to increase in complexity and difficulty through the final 16 (studies 41- 56), which are some of the most delightful music written for guitar. I hope you all enjoy working on and performing these works as much as I have!

Then, its location on the guitar is given first in Tab, and then in traditional guitar nomenclature. the first two examples in each study present the notes in a non-metered way. the rest of the examples are brief etudes that use the new note in a melodic, intervallic and eventually harmonic context. Book Fundamentals of Guitar

  • Author : MILES OKAZAKI
  • Publisher : Mel Bay Publications

Download or read book Fundamentals of Guitar written by MILES OKAZAKI and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. Beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique andthe exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. It is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. Part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. It then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. This is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. Part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation.Part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in "Symmetrical Picking," a methodbased on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. The focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. It is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. The study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. This begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing twosimultaneous tempos. The book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playingone rhythm against another. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to beinclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): "Even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. The amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. For this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player "could" do, rather than what the player "should" do. The principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else?s. The ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. Pick and choose the studies that seem interesting - there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. If any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. Its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives.

Book Achieving Guitar Artistry Linear Guitar Etudes

Download or read book Achieving Guitar Artistry Linear Guitar Etudes written by William Bay and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÊThis is the flagship book in Mel Bay's new Achieving Guitar Artistry series. Herein you will find an extensive collection of linear pieces with interesting melodic content. Frequent performance of these etudes will not only enhance technique, but offer the guitarist a wonderful opportunity to improve tone, touch and lyrical phrasing. We suggest playing each etude at a slow tempo at first, the goal being to achieve a clear and beautiful tone on every note. The next objective is to develop a sense of lyrical completeness to each musical phrase. Make the phrases sing! Once you have achieved the desired quality of tone and expression, increase the tempo to work on the technique. Mel Bay's Guitar Journals - Mastering the Fingerboard: The Reading Book (MB20903) would make an ideal supplement to Linear Guitar Etudes as it presents etudes in all keys and positions. The pieces in Linear Guitar Etudes are multi-positional. That is, the player will be required to move from position to position on the fingerboard. The music is presented in standard notation only, with left-hand fingering included on the more complex passages, and circled numbers to indicate the strings where certainnotes and passages are to be played. These etudes sound good on both nylon and steel-string guitars, and will be a valuable addition to the music library of any guitarist, enhancing their abilities regardless of the style of music played.
