Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gothic novel of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries often feature charismatic villains and brooding Byronic heroes. Melmoth, the mysterious title character, is both of these in this, Maturin’s best-known work and one of the last of the classic Gothic novels. Melmoth the Wanderer is a slow-burning supernatural story of suspense and horror that follows the menacing, ageless Wanderer through a complex web of nested stories within stories, told by his would-be victims and others who have crossed his path over his unnaturally long life. Along the way the tales take us from nineteenth-century Ireland, to utopian Indian islands, to a romantic castle in the seventeenth-century English countryside, to Spain in the days of the Inquisition, where human horrors vie with the supernatural. Maturin’s influence on the modern horror novel can be seen in later works like Dracula, another novel that follows its title character across Europe, while weaving the tales of different narrators into a portrait of a mysterious and terrifying figure. They shut themselves up, - they prostrated themselves before the shrines of the saints, -tbey occupied them selves whole hours ln taking minutes of their consciences, and magnifying the tri vial defects of conventual discipline into offences in the eye of God, in order to give consequence to their' penitence in the hearing of the confessor, -in fact, they would have been glad to accuse themselves of a crime, to escape from the monotony of a xmonastic conscience. There was a kind of silent bustle in the house, that very much favoured my pur poses. Hour after hour I demanded pa per for my confession. I obtained it, but my frequent demands excited suspicion. Book The Cambridge Companion to Gothic Fiction

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Gothic Fiction written by Jerrold E. Hogle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-29 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gothic as a form of fiction-making has played a major role in Western culture since the late eighteenth century. In this volume, fourteen world-class experts on the Gothic provide thorough and revealing accounts of this haunting-to-horrifying type of fiction from the 1760s (the decade of The Castle of Otranto, the first so-called 'Gothic story') to the end of the twentieth century (an era haunted by filmed and computerized Gothic simulations). Along the way, these essays explore the connections of Gothic fictions to political and industrial revolutions, the realistic novel, the theatre, Romantic and post-Romantic poetry, nationalism and racism from Europe to America, colonized and post-colonial populations, the rise of film and other visual technologies, the struggles between 'high' and 'popular' culture, changing psychological attitudes towards human identity, gender and sexuality, and the obscure lines between life and death, sanity and madness. The volume also includes a chronology and guides to further reading.
