Book A Needs Assessment of the U s Fire Service

Download or read book A Needs Assessment of the U s Fire Service written by Federal Emergency Management Agency and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results based on data from US local fire departments participating in a needs assessment survey. Public Law 106-398, Fire Investment and Response Enhancement (FIRE) Act, Title XVII – Assistance to Firefighters, recognized that America's fire departments provide service and protection with impact far beyond the borders of the communities that support them. In order to provide this service and protection with the effectiveness, speed, and safety that their home communities and the nation as a whole demand, many fire departments will need to increase their resources, in any of several categories. PL 106-398 created a fund to support worthy proposals to address these needs. But PL 106-398 also recognized that our current understanding of the magnitude and nature of fire department needs is not well defined. Furthermore, the rationale for Federal government assistance to meet these needs is also in need of greater definition, given the normal presumption that routine fire protection is a local function, set to meet locally defined goals and supported by local resources.

Book FEMA U S Fire Administration Strategies for Marketing Your Fire Department Today and Beyond

Download or read book FEMA U S Fire Administration Strategies for Marketing Your Fire Department Today and Beyond written by United States Fire Administration (USFA) and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of the fire service is being, and will continue to be, driven by changes in society. These changes include new expectations of the citizens served by the fire service-such as greater accountability for the use of public resources and improving the overall efficiency of programs and services. Members of the fire service have new expectations. Also, the fire service will continue to become more diverse, in both members and services. To keep pace with society, the fire service must review its current mission and determine if that mission will indeed meet the demands of the next century. The old mission of simply "saving lives and protecting property" may no longer have the depth or scope necessary to meet the expectations of the public. If, indeed, the mission must change, that change should come from within the fire service. This will require innovation, courage, and the commitment of fire service leaders at all levels, both career and volunteer. In fact, change may be the single greatest challenge facing the fire service in the next century. The purpose of this manual is to assist fire service leaders in examining the future, the role of the fire service in that future, and ways to "get there from here." It is designed to provide a fire chief, a public information officer, and other leaders in the fire service with guidance and tips on marketing a department and its services to the local customers: the citizens and organizations served by the department. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Fire Officer III and IV Training Solution! Chief officers need to know how to make the transition from company officer to chief officer. Chief Officer: Principles and Practice is designed to help make the transition from company officer to chief officer a smooth evolution. Covering the entire scope of Levels III and IV from the 2009 Edition of NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, Chief Officer combines current content with dynamic features and interactive technology to better support instructors and to help prepare future chief officers to become problem-solving leaders for their organizations. Chief Officer: Principles and Practice has a clear focus on instilling fire fighter safety throughout an organization’s culture. Reducing fire fighter injuries and deaths requires the dedicated efforts of every fire fighter, fire officer, and fire department. The entire fire community must work together to achieve one common goal: to ensure that everyone goes home. Chief officers therefore set the tone for safety in their organization, and this textbook embraces that philosophy. It is with this goal in mind that the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives, developed by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, are integrated throughout the text. The features in this textbook will help students take that extra step toward becoming outstanding chief officers. These features include: • Scenario-Based Learning. You Are the Chief Officer and Chief Officer in Action are found in each chapter to encourage and foster critical thinking skills. • Practical Tips for the Chief Officer. Chief Officer Tips and Voices of Experience essays are integrated into each chapter to provide helpful advice from experienced chief officers. • Level IV Job Performance Requirements. Fire Officer Level IV content is highlighted to discern Level III JPRs from Level IV. • Walk the Talk. Additional activities encourage students to take what they have learned in the chapter and apply it to their own department.
