Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of an innovative program of treatment for AIDS in Africa that succeeded in the face of international development agencies’ “afro pessimism” Until this century, Western governments and foundations framing policies for AIDS relief in Africa maintained that prevention alone was a preferable alternative to prevention-plus-treatment, which would be costly and impractical in Africa, or would benefit only the prosperous and well-connected. Sant'Egidio’s Dream argues that this initial, failed approach to AIDS in African countries reflects a global moral blindness to the imperative to save lives–which was not lost on the Community of Sant’Egidio, an Italian, Catholic social movement rooted in “the gospel and friendship” and present in 70 countries. Drawing on two decades of peacemaking and humanitarian experience in Africa, the movement grasped the evidence that HIV, if treated, does not lead to AIDS and to death–and saw that treatment gives hope in Africa just as it does in the developed world. By enabling large numbers of people to live with a chronic disease, and involving family and neighbors in free and effective care, it offers a dream of a society surviving and even thriving in spite of HIV. In 2002, Sant Egidio established the DREAM (Drug Resource Enhancement Against AIDS and Malnutrition) project, a community-based approach to the AIDS crisis, rooted in medicine, epidemiology, and public health, that has proven effective in ten countries where it has been implemented–and has emerged as a model for healthcare in the global South.

Book AIDS Meeting the Challenge

Download or read book AIDS Meeting the Challenge written by Sonja Weinreich and published by World Council of Churches. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year HIV/AIDS claims the lives of millions and profoundly affects the economic, political and social stability of lands and regions. If humanity is not to be overwhelmed by this disease, global solidarity and concerted action are required. This book provides essential information for coalitions working locally, regionally and globally to prevent the spread of infection and to offer humane treatment and community resources to people living with HIV/AIDS. It is based on the authors' personal experiences and research as they have engaged in the campaign to eradicate AIDS. They address matters of medical fact, and also take into consideration sociological, psychological and theological questions that inevitably arise. The book is a compendium of current information on the crisis of HIV/AIDS, with indications of how readers may continue to update their knowledge amid the constant changes in basic data, scientific developments and a flood of specialized literature. The topics covered include HIV transmission, vulnerability to infection, socio-economic contexts, stigma and discrimination, prevention, care, antiretroviral therapy, advocacy and lobbying, as well as reflections on the churches, theology and HIV/AIDS.

Book AIDS in the World II

    Book Details:
  • Author : Global AIDS Policy Coalition
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 0195090977
  • Pages : 650 pages

Download or read book AIDS in the World II written by Global AIDS Policy Coalition and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIDS in the World, Vol. 1, published in 1992, was the first full analysis of mankind's global confrontation with this disease. The AIDS scene, however, has been changing so rapidly that the need for a second volume was felt much earlier than expected. In AIDS in the World II, the authors extend the international comparisons from 38 countries to the entire world, and show that the AIDS pandemic has become increasingly fragmented within the world population. They present data that takes the discussion beyond the current understanding of the vulnerability of nations and communities to the worldwide spread of HIV, engaging in a detailed exploration of the social strategies that have enabled individuals to avoid infection. Mann and Tarantola chart a course into the future based on an incisive investigation of the global pandemic and response, the crucial lessons learned from the first decade, and their expert understanding of the scientific and social dimensions of the HIV challenge. The authors explain how the variety of reactions to the pandemic has contributed to a more advanced awareness of our vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, and offer a blueprint for an expanded global prevention effort. Intended to serve the information needs of all professionals involved in AIDS research and care, this volume's accessibility and clarity of writing make it highly suitable for the general reader as well.
