The prosperity associated with the cattle industry drew wealthy investors to Wyoming Territory in the 1870s and early 1880s. They stocked the range with thousands of cows and made considerable fortunes until the harsh winter of 18861887, when the cattle market collapsed. Many of those early ranchers left Wyoming, which opened the door for the establishment of what would become a huge sheep business. During the 1890s and the early decades of the 20th century, the various Homestead Acts drew others to Wyoming in search of a brighter future. As most of Wyomings land was suited for grazing, not farming, smaller ranches began to play a more important role in the states growth. Wyomings Historic Ranches provides a rare glimpse of the cattle baron ranches as well as the more modest operations that are tucked away along remote valleys and streams, not visible to the average visitor or resident of the state.

The pay is modest; the toll on the body hard and the reward great. Hours on a horse, tending fences under wide-open sky as a hawk circles overhead, calves born under starry nights that finish with conversation around a campfire, the ole cook singing while making grub-- this is my "office." I have been asked many times why we cowboys ride for our money and rope for short pay. I can't imagine any other way. My photos are a testament to the cowboy life, defined by hard work in God's glorious country. Gold- and blue-hour light convey that glory and the long hours. This is who we are. Our handshake is a promise, our word is all you need, and living for the greater good is our way of life.

George Harry Cross was born into a family of bankers, lawyers and other professional men. Although he was assured of a bright future by following this family tradition, he chose to fulfill his dream of becoming a cowboy. He traveled from his home in Montreal, Canada to Colorado where his adventures began. As a "greenhorn," he learned the hard way how life was lived in a land of few comforts and even fewer laws. He trailed his first herd of cattle from Colorado into Wyoming and, by 1883, had established his Braehead Ranch in Upper LaPrele Valley near Douglas. At the time of his death in 1946, his was the largest shorthorn cattle ranch in the country. He was also involved in the betterment of his community, establishing a school and post office in the valley. He later helped with the organization of Converse County, serving on the first board of commissioners. In addition, Cross served as senator from Converse County in the third, fourth, fifth, ninth, tenth and eleventh State legislative sessions, earning the respect of his fellow legislators as they enacted the necessary laws to govern the new state of Wyoming. His was truly a life well-lived.
