Tibiofibu lar ligament may be torn. Line of fracture in fibula obliquely downward Signs 1--Swelling around ankle joint 2--Crepitus three or four inches above ankle 3--Loss of fibular spring 4--Three points of tenderness A--Tibiofibular ligament in front B--Bone of internal malleolus c--Outer border of fibula Treatment An anesthetic given to accomplish reduction. The foot is sometimes displaced backward, as well as outward, and this must be carefully considered in effecting reduction. A dressing should now be applied that will hold the foot in a slight varus position and at the same time permit ready and daily inspection. The straight splint of Dupuytren serves this purpose. During the first two weeks the dressing should be removed every three or four days with a view to insuring the continuance of good position (internal malleolus, great toe, and patella in straight line), and for the purpose of massage and instituting gentle passive movements.
