Book Differences in Graduate Students Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help as a Function of Field of Study

Download or read book Differences in Graduate Students Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help as a Function of Field of Study written by Brie Jeweler-Bentz and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals' attitudes toward seeking psychological help play a major role in determining their actual help-seeking behavior. Among college student populations, research has focused on psychological help-seeking attitudes in an effort to understand the characteristics of college students who do and do not seek psychological treatment. These help-seeking attitudes have been found to be related to a variety of demographic and psychological variables. The present study investigated the extent to which differences in psychological help-seeking attitudes exist as a function of one particular demographic variable, field of study, in a university graduate student sample. Students in the social sciences were found to have significantly more positive help-seeking attitudes than students in both natural science and applied fields. Clinical Psychology students held the most positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help. These results may be of particular interest to college counseling center staff who wish to maximize the likelihood that students in need of psychological services actually seek treatment. Specific implications for counseling centers are discussed.

Book Attitudes Towards Mental Health Help Seeking and Stigma Among College Students

Download or read book Attitudes Towards Mental Health Help Seeking and Stigma Among College Students written by Mukul Khandelwal and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and high levels of stress, are a frequent concern among college students (Duffy et al., 2019; Oswalt et al., 2020). However, rates for mental health help-seeking in college students are low (Marsh & Wilcoxon, 2015). Various factors contribute to low help-seeking behaviors, and these include psychological well-being, stigma, and demographic factors such as gender and age. This study explored the relationships between psychological well-being, attitudes towards help-seeking, and stigma towards receiving psychological help in a sample of 108 undergraduate students. Participants were mainly White (72%), female (68%), and heterosexual (71%). Results indicated a significant positive correlation between age and help-seeking. Non-White students endorsed higher levels of stigma towards receiving psychological help than White students. Age and stigma predicted attitudes towards help-seeking. Possible explanations are discussed and directions for future research are highlighted.

Book Understanding Help Seeking in Academic Medicine A Phenomenological Study of the Help Seeking Process of Medical Students in Distress

Download or read book Understanding Help Seeking in Academic Medicine A Phenomenological Study of the Help Seeking Process of Medical Students in Distress written by Jason Abella Rock and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students in U.S. medical schools experience a high occurrence of psychological distress which can impact their health, professional behavior, and ability to succeed academically (Dyrbye et al, 2005). Despite the growing attention to this topic and the increased provision of mental health services available to medical students, many obstacles still remain for the achievement of student well-being (Givens & Tija, 2002). In addition, little research has been reported on medical students' views on the help-seeking process; thus the aim of this study is to explore the attitudes of medical students regarding the process of seeking help for issues of distress encountered during medical school. For the purposes of this study, in-depth interviews of medical students were used to examine the individual, interpersonal, sociocultural, and institutional factors that distressed medical students cite as reasons for their help-seeking decisions. The interview data and subsequent analysis provided the following key findings: (1) help-seeking behavior is a result of not only deliberate, reasoned decision-making but also of spontaneous, reactive decision-making, (2) a positive help-seeking attitude and prototype increase willingness to get help, (3) the stages of the help-seeking process can be experienced non-linearly, (4) external and internal factors can cause delays at any stage of the help-seeking process, and (5) the way in which each student defines his or her own distress impacts his or her help-seeking behavior. This study introduced the Integrated Model of Help-Seeking Behavior (IMHSB), which combined existing models to depict the help-seeking process as an intersecting array of circumstances, various systems, and personal and social meaning, all of which interact within the four distinct stages of help seeking. The findings support this revised model as a suitable framework for viewing help-seeking behavior and also as a flexible model for future research. The IMHSB provides an integrated approach which can assist educators and policy-makers in considering all the possible barriers and drivers that influence students' help-seeking behavior when planning strategies for supporting the mental health of medical students.

Book College Students Attitudes and Perception of the Therapeutic Competence of Counselors and Other Mental Health Professionals

Download or read book College Students Attitudes and Perception of the Therapeutic Competence of Counselors and Other Mental Health Professionals written by Mohamed Badra and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public's perception of counselors has been a topic of concern for many researchers. However, research examining the attitudes towards seeking mental health services and the effect such perceptions have on the propensity of public use is in its prime. Such knowledge is necessary for the benefit of the consumer as well as concerned mental health professional organizations. Furthermore, the ability to discriminate consumer perception based on the professional identity of the mental health service provider will serve as a benchmark for a young profession- counseling- to understand its current status in the minds of the general public, in comparison to related mental health professions, and for counseling professional organizations to better allocate resources aimed at professional advocacy efforts. As potential consumers of mental health services, it is of great merit to understand college students' perceptions of mental health professionals' therapeutic competence, and their attitudes towards seeking services based on the identity of the mental health service provider; i.e. counselor, psychologist, or social worker. This study provided an overview of - three helping professions: counseling, psychology, and social work. Additionally, it expanded upon the circumstances surrounding the origination of each discipline and their governing bodies, current vocational opportunities and average salaries for members of each discipline, the rationale for conducting this study and the psychometric properties of the instrument- the Inventory of Attitudes toward Seeking Mental Health Services (IASMHS)- utilized by this study. The primary hypothesis which suggested a significant difference in student perception of the mental health professional's level of competence with respect to the identity of the professional was tested. Additionally, student attitudes towards seeking mental health services were measured and a comparison on the basis of the identity of the helper was drawn. The research was unable to find statistical significance regarding the previously posed hypotheses. However, a significant difference was noted between the sexes and their propensity to seek mental health services such that the females in this sample were more likely to seek mental health services than were the male participants. Furthermore, a statistically significant and moderate relationship existed between the number of courses taken in a helping discipline and participants' attitudes towards seeking professional mental health services such that as the number of courses completed increased, so did the positive manner in which participants viewed seeking mental health services. The researcher concluded the study by addressing its limitations and discussing future suggestions for researchers.
