Book Medical Aspects of Helicopter Safety and Crashworthiness

Download or read book Medical Aspects of Helicopter Safety and Crashworthiness written by D. F. Shanahan and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopters are being used in increasing numbers for military operations in countries throughout the world. In the U.S. Army, helicopters comprise approximately 94 percent of the active fleet. While medical considerations for helicopter operations are much the same as for fixed wing operations, there are some differences of emphasis that will be reviewed. A review of the past 5 year's accident experience reveals that 80 percent are attributed to human error. It is shown that crew error is never a sufficient explanation for an accident. The relationship of errors to system deficiencies is established through human factors analysis. Once identifide, appropriate measures can be instituted to correct these deficiencies. Since current operational helicopters are not equipped with systems for inflight escape, crashworthiness is a key issue in their design. Principles of helicopter crashworthiness are reviewed, and the means for deriving these principles from crash injury analysis is discussed.

Download or read book Crashworthiness Design Features for Advanced Utility Helicopters written by Brian L. Carnell and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 60s, the Eustis Directorate of the U.S. Army Air Mobility Research and Development Laboratory contracted with the Aviation Crash Injury Research (AvCIR) Group of the Flight Safety Foundation to define the Army aircraft crash environment and development design concepts and criteria to reduce injuries. For this study, the group investigated many accidents involving U.S. Army utility helicopters, conducted full-scale aircraft crash tests, evaluated aircraft crashworthiness, and developed crashworthiness design concepts. The examination showed that injuries, fatalities, and aircraft damage could have been reduced by improved design. The results were presented in USAAMRDL Technical Report 71-22, "Crash Survival Design Guide," which defines the hazards encountered in typical helicopter crashes. That document was used from the outset in design of the U.S. Army/Sikorsky UH-60A advanced utility helicopter with the objective of achieving an exceptional level of crashworthiness. To give some indication of the effectiveness of the crashworthy design achieved, we considered a fleet of 1,000 aircraft operating an average of 900 hours per aircraft per year. Our very conservative estimate shows that in 10 years of operation, 80 serious injuries could have been prevented and 200 lives saved. The crashworthy fuel system and crashworthy energy-absorbing landing gear and structure could save $58 million in material costs - $22 million saved by the fuel system and $36 million saved by the landing gear and structure. In addition, savings in personnel training and replacement would bring the estimated total savings to $78 million.
