Book Measuring Quality of Life in Communities Surrounding Airports

Download or read book Measuring Quality of Life in Communities Surrounding Airports written by Katherine B. Preston and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many airports seek to understand their impacts on neighboring towns, cities, and regions through economic impact analyses, employment studies, and environmental studies, such as those that focus on sustainability efforts or noise. The TRB Airport Cooperative Research Program's ACRP Research Report 221: Measuring Quality of Life in Communities Surrounding Airports addresses an emerging need that airports have to take a more holistic look at how they affect their neighbors and how they can build stronger community relationships. Airports can benefit from a more comprehensive understanding of the variables affecting their surrounding communities, over which they may have little to no control. Supplemental materials to the report include a Dataset, a Quality of Life Assessment Survey Tool, and a Sample Quality of Life Assessment Introduction PowerPoint.

Book Aviation and the Environment

Download or read book Aviation and the Environment written by Gerald Dillingham and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAA estimates that the number of flights in the U.S. will increase 20% by 2024. It also has identified numerous airports that will need to expand to handle more flights. However, increasing airport capacity and operations poses potentially significant impacts on the environment and quality of life for surrounding communities. This report addresses: (1) airports' actions to reduce their environmental impacts; (2) the extent airports believe environmental issues delay development or operational changes; and (3) the strategies airports can adopt to address environmental issues. The report surveyed the 150 busiest airports as measured by the number of operations. Illus. This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find report.

Book Impacts of Airports on the Quality of Life of Surrounding Communities

Download or read book Impacts of Airports on the Quality of Life of Surrounding Communities written by Pedro Manuel Maddens Toscano and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London Heathrow Airport has both beneficial and detrimental impacts on surrounding communities such as, for example, job creation and noise. The population living in the airport’s proximity notices, cares about, and perceives its impacts which have often been studied only partially in literature. This thesis used the concept of Quality of Life to look at impacts multi-dimensionally. A framework was developed and used to systematically analyze Quality of Life impacts of Heathrow Airport using both spatial and regression analysis methods at different spatial resolutions with data collected from statistical authorities and social media. Low spatial resolution analysis found a beneficial impact of proximity to Heathrow Airport for economic conditions, accessibility & connectivity, health, and well-being metrics. Opportunities to verify this analysis with higher-resolution data were sought, but limited data was available. Housing transaction data was available at both low and middle spatial resolutions, and a beneficial impact of proximity to Heathrow Airport was observed at both levels. Counterfactual analysis found that the Heathrow Region performed better than many other regions for housing values and health metrics, and worse for certain well-being/happiness metrics. Additionally, high spatial resolution social media data was collected to analyze perceptions, sentiments, and opinions posted in proximity to Heathrow Airport. This analysis found that aviation and aviation-noise tweets skew negatively as compared to all tweets and that sentiment closer to the airport skews more positively than in the Greater London Region.

Book Exploring Airport Employee Commute and Parking Strategies

Download or read book Exploring Airport Employee Commute and Parking Strategies written by Diane M. Ricard and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airport employees are vital to the operation of an airport. They staff the airport on a daily basis from well before the first flight operation until after the last flight operation, which at many airports is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Airport employees generate a significant number of vehicle trips to and from the airport each day, which impacts air quality, airport traffic conditions, and traffic in the communities surrounding the airport and on the freeway system. The purpose of this report was to determine what is known about airport employee commute patterns and commute modes, what programs are being offered to airport employees by the airport operator or a transportation management association (TMA) to provide them with alternatives to the drive alone commute to work, how progress is being monitored, what is known about the effectiveness of airport employee commute options (ECO) programs, what the challenges are for the providers of such programs, and to research some ECO programs offered by non-airport employers for program elements that may have applicability in the airport environment. This report was accomplished through a literature search of airport employee commute programs, commute programs offered by non-airport employers that may have applicability in the airport environment, and through interviews with four U.S. and one U.K. airport operators (of 16 airports and 3 TMAs identified, 84 percent interviewed) that offer comprehensive airport ECO programs. Each of the five case studies provides an example of how ECO strategies are applied in the airport environment.
