Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present measurements related to the CKM angle [beta] from BABAR based on 82 or H"15 fb−1 data samples collected at the PEP-II ee− asymmetric B Factory collider. A new method allowing to measure the sign of cos2[beta] with B° 2!J/[psi] ''K*°'' events is explained and related results reported. Recent CP measurements in the penguin dominated modes B° 2![phi]K°, B° 2!K K− K{sub S}°, B° 2![pi]° K{sub S}° and B° 2!f0 (980)K{sub S}° are presented.

Book Measurements of the CKM Angle Beta

Book excerpt: In this article I report on new and updated measurements of the CP-violating parameter {beta}({phi}{sub 1}), which is related to the phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix of the electroweak interaction. Over the past few years, {beta} has become the most precisely known parameter of the CKM unitarity triangle that governs the B system. The results presented here were produced by the two B Factories, BABAR and Belle, based on their most recent datasets of over 600 million B{bar B} events combined. The new world average for sin2{beta}, measured in the theoretically and experimentally cleanest charmonium modes, such as B{sup 0} {yields} J/{Psi}K{sub S}{sup 0}, is sin 2{beta} = 0.685 {+-} 0.032. In addition to these tree-level dominated decays, independent measurements of sin2{beta} are obtained from gluonic b {yields} s penguin decays, including B{sup 0} {yields} {phi}K{sub S}{sup 0}, B{sup 0} {yields} {eta}'K{sub S}{sup 0} and others. There are hints, albeit somewhat weaker than earlier this year, that these measurements tend to come out low compared to the charmonium average, giving rise to the tantalizing possibility that New Physics amplitudes could be contributing to the corresponding loop diagrams. Clearly, more data from both experiments are needed to elucidate these intriguing differences.

Book Measurement of the CKM Angles alpha and gamma at the BABAR Experiment

Download or read book Measurement of the CKM Angles alpha and gamma at the BABAR Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the BABAR Experiment is to test the Standard Model explanation of CP violation in weak decays by over-constraining the CKM Unitarity Triangle. This includes the measurement of all three angles of the triangle. Although precise measurements of the angle [beta] have been obtained using B decays to charmonium states, the remaining angles, [alpha] and [gamma], pose greater experimental challenges. In this paper, the latest measurements of modes which will constrain [alpha] and [gamma] will be presented, including B[sup 0] --> [rho][sup +][rho][sup -] for [alpha] and a measurement of sin(2[beta] + [gamma]) from the B[sup 0] --> D(*)[sup [+-]][pi][sup [-+]] system.

The results are obtained from data samples of about 230 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays collected between 1999 and 2004 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC.

Book Measurements of the CKM Angle Phi3 gamma

Download or read book Measurements of the CKM Angle Phi3 gamma written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a review on the measurements of the CKM angle [gamma] ([phi]3)1 as performed by the BABAR and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy ee− B factories colliders PEP-II and KEKB. These measurements are using either charged or neutral B decays. For charged B decays the modes {tilde D}°K−, {tilde D}*°K−, and {tilde D}°K*− are employed, where {tilde D}° indicates either a D° or a {bar D}° meson. Direct CP violation is exploited. It is caused by interferences between V{sub ub} and V{sub cb} accessible transitions that generate asymmetries in the final states. For these decays various methods exist to enhance the sensitivity to the V{sub ub} transition, carrying the weak phase [gamma]. For neutral B decays, the modes D{sup (*){+-}}[pi]{sup {-+}} and D{sup {+-}}[rho]{sup {-+}} are used. In addition to the V{sub ub} and V{sub cb} interferences, these modes are sensitive to the B°-{bar B}° mixing, so that time dependent analyses are performed to extract sin(2[beta] + [gamma]). An alternative method would use the lower branching ratios decay modes {tilde D}{sup (*)0}{bar K}{sup (*)0} where much larger asymmetries are expected. The various available methods are mostly ''theoretically clean'' and always free of penguins diagrams. In some cases a high sensitivity to [gamma] is expected and large asymmetries may be seen. But these measurements are always experimentally difficult as one has to face with either low branching ratios, or small asymmetries, or additional technical/theoretical difficulties due to Dalitz/SU(3) and re-scattering models needed to treat/estimate nuisance parameters such as unknown strong phases and the relative magnitude of the amplitude of the interfering ''V{sub ub}'' transitions. Thus at the present time only a relatively limited precision on [gamma] can be extracted from these measurements. The current world average is [gamma] = (7826{sup +19}){sup o} [1]. For other methods and long term perspectives, as discussed in details, the reader is invited to consult the proceedings of the recent CKM workshop that was held in Nagoya (Japan) in December 2006 [2].

Book excerpt: The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element V{sub ub} is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, representing the coupling of the b quark to the u quark. It is one of the smallest and least known elements of the CKM matrix. With the increasingly precise measurements of decay-time-dependent CP asymmetries in B-meson decays, in particular the angle [beta] [1, 2], improved measurements of the magnitude of V{sub ub} will allow for stringent experimental tests of the Standard Model mechanism for CP violation [3]. The extraction of.

Book Measurement of Gamma and 2 Beta Gamma

Download or read book Measurement of Gamma and 2 Beta Gamma written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on the initial measurements of the angle [gamma] and the sum of angles 2[beta] +[gamma] of the Unitarity Triangle. When compared with indirect information on the value of [gamma] from other measurements of CKM parameters, the measurement of these angles will provide a precise test of Standard Model predictions, as statistics increase. There are several methods for directly measuring [gamma] and 2[beta] +[gamma]. We report on the status of each of these techniques, and the resulting constraints on the values of these angles.

They measure the B{sup 0} {yields} {rho}{sup +}{rho}{sup -} branching fraction, longitudinal polarization fraction f{sub L}, and the CP-violating parameters S{sub long} and C{sub long}: {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {rho}{sup +}{rho}{sup -}) = (23.5 {+-} 2.2(stat) {+-} 4.1(syst)) x 10{sup -6}, f{sub L} = 0.977 {+-} 0.024(stat){sub -0.013}{sup +0.015}(syst), S{sub long} = -0.19 {+-} 0.21(stat){sub -0.07}{sup +0.05}(syst), C{sub long} = -0.07 {+-} 0.15(stat) {+-} 0.06(syst). Using an isospin analysis of B {yields} {rho}{rho} decays they determine the angle {alpha} of the unitarity triangle. One of the two solutions, {alpha} [74,117]{sup o} at 68% CL, is compatible with the standard model. All results presented here are preliminary.
