Book excerpt: The authors present preliminary measurements of the branching fraction and the CP-violating charge asymmetry in the B[sup +] --> K[sup 0][pi][sup +] decay, and a preliminary measurement of the branching fraction of the B[sup 0] --> K[sup 0][bar K][sup 0] decay. No evidence of direct CP violation in the B[sup +] --> K[sup 0][pi][sup +] mode is observed. The B[sup 0] --> K[sup 0][bar K][sup 0] measurement constitutes the first observation of this decay channel: the probability of obtaining the result assuming the null-signal hypothesis is 3.4 x 10[sup -6]. The authors have also searched for the B[sup +] --> [bar K][sup 0]K[sup +] decay and set an upper limit on its branching fraction at 2.35 x 10[sup -6] at the 90% C.L. The branching-fraction measurements reported here are consistent with previous measurements of the same quantities, but are extracted from a data sample larger by a factor of 2.6.

From a time-dependent maximum likelihood fit they measure the branching fraction [Beta](B[sup 0] [yields] f[sub 0](980)([yields][Pi][sup +][pi][sup 0])K[sup 0]) = (6.0 [+-] 0.9 [+-] 0.6 [+-] 1.2) x 10[sup -6], the mixing-induced CP violation parameter S = 1.62[sub -0.51][sup +0.56] [+-] 0.09 [+-] 0.04 and the direct CP violation parameter C = 0.27 [+-] 0.36 [+-] 0.10 [+-] 0.07, where the first errors are statistical, the second systematic and the third due to model uncertainties. They measure the f[sub 0](980) mass and width to be m[sub f[sub 0(980)]] = (980.6 [+-] 4.1 [+-] 0.5 [+-] 4.0) MeV/c[sup 2] and [Lambda][sub f[sub 0(980)]] = (43[sub -9][sup +12] [+-] 3 [+-] 9) MeV/c[sup 2], respectively.

For the decay B{sup 0} {yields} {omega}K{sub s}{sup 0}, we measure the time-dependent CP-violation parameters S = 0.51{sub -0.39}{sup +0.35} {+-} 0.02, and C = -0.55{sub -0.26}{sup +0.28} {+-} 0.03. We also measure the branching fractions, in units of 10{sup -6}, {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {omega}{pi}{sup +}) = 6.1 {+-} 0.7 {+-} 0.4, {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {omega}K{sup +}) = 6.1 {+-} 0.6 {+-} 0.4, and {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {omega}K{sup 0}) = 6.2 {+-} 1.0 {+-} 0.4, and charge asymmetries {Alpha}{sub ch}(B{sup +} {yields} {omega}{pi}{sup +}) = -0.01 {+-} 0.10 {+-} 0.01 and {Alpha}{sub ch}(B{sup +} {yields} {omega}K{sup +}) = 0.05 {+-} 0.09 {+-} 0.01.

They measure the[pi][sup+][pi][sup 0] branching fraction and they obtain[Beta](B[sup+][yields][pi][sup+][pi][sup 0])= (5.5[sub -0.9][sup+1.0][+-] 0.6) x 10[sup -6] with a significance of 7.7[sigma] including systematic uncertainties. The measure the K[sup+][pi][sup 0] and K[sup 0][pi][sup 0] branching fractions to be[Beta](B[sup+][yields] K[sup+][pi][sup 0])= (12.8[sub -1.1][sup+1.2][+-] 1.0) x 10[sup -6] and[Beta](B[sup 0][yields] K[sup 0][pi][sup 0])= (10.4[+-] 1.5[+-] 0.8) x 10[sup -6]. At the same time, the direct CP-violating asymmetries are investigated and they find[Alpha][sub[pi][sup+][pi][sup 0]]= -0.03[sub -0.17][sup+0.18][+-] 0.02, [Alpha][sub K[sup+][pi][sup 0]]= -0.09[+-] 0.09[+-] 0.01and[Alpha][sub K[sup 0][pi][sup 0]]= 0.03[+-] 0.36[+-] 0.09, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

The measurement of the polarization of the penguin decay is of special interest. There is no tree contribution to the decay amplitude and only a very small annihilation process. The polarization of the B[sup +] --> K*[sup 0][rho][sup +] decay mode can be compared to that already measured for the similar penguin decay B --> K*[phi].

Book excerpt: The invariance of physical laws under the combination of exchange of particles with antiparticles (charge conjugation, C) and reversal of coordinates (parity, P) is called CP symmetry. The violation of CP symmetry was first discovered in 1964 in the neutral kaon system, and is in general one of the great puzzles of particle physics. The recent observation of CP violation in the B meson system has been a simultaneous success for model predictions and experiment. The opportunity now exists to probe details of the underlying mechanisms. This thesis presents measurements of the branching fraction and time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in neutral B decays to J/[psi][pi][sup 0]. The decay amplitude for this channel features both tree and penguin diagram contributions, the interference of which can yield a result for the asymmetry differing from that found in the ''golden mode'' B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi] K[sub s][sup 0]. Using the measured branching fraction and CP asymmetry, constraints are placed on the ratio of penguin to tree amplitudes in B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi][pi][sup 0]. In addition, the impact on the CP asymmetry measurement in B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi] K[sub s][sup 0] is discussed. The results are presented for e[sup+]e[sup -] annihilation data collected with the BABAR detector on the[Upsilon](4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. The measurement of the branching fraction, based on about 23 million B[bar B] pairs collected between October 1999 and October 2000, yields BF(B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi][pi][sup 0])= (2.0[+-] 0.6 (stat)[+-] 0.2(syst)) x 10[sup -5]. With about 88 million B[bar B] pairs collected during the years 1999-2002, our results for the coefficients of the cosine and sine terms of the CP asymmetry are C[sub J/[psi][pi][sup 0]]= 0.38[+-] 0.41 (stat)[+-] 0.09 (syst) and S[sub J/[psi][pi][sup 0]]= 0.05[+-] 0.49 (stat)[+-] 0.16 (syst).

These results improve the previous existing measurements from BABAR. All results presented in this document are preliminary.
