Book Measurement of Equation of State of Compressed Hydrogen and Deuterium

Download or read book Measurement of Equation of State of Compressed Hydrogen and Deuterium written by Katerina Falk and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed understanding of the equation of state of light elements such as the hydrogen isotopes in the warm dense matter (WDM) regime is essential for the modeling of the inner structure of many astrophysical objects, in particular Jovian planets as well as inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research. In these systems quantum degeneracy and strong inter-particle forces play an important role making its theoretical description extremely challenging. The Omega laser was used to drive a planar shock wave in cryogenically cooled deuterium creating WDM conditions [1]. We used a set of independent diagnostics to measure the thermodynamic conditions of WDM including velocity interferometry (VISAR), streaked optical pyrometry (SOP) and x-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS). With a narrow-band x-ray backlighter probe at backscattering geometry the spectrally resolved XRTS accessed the boundary of collective and non-collective regimes making our measurement sensitive to both electron temperature and density. This work presents a full set of measurements of the thermodynamic properties for different laser intensity drives creating warm dense deuterium at various degrees of degeneracy and coupling. The measured electron densities and temperatures ranged between 0.2 and 2.15x 1023 cm-3 and 0.6 - 20 eV respectively. The scattering measurement confirmed the findings from the VISAR and SOP data and together density- functional molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations provides a novel self-consistent approach for an accurate characterization of the microscopic structure of WDM [2]. Complementary to the laser compression work, findings from project employing static compression hydrogen with the use of diamond anvil cells is also be presented. The first direct measurement of the local field correction to the Coulomb interactions in degenerate plasma was obtained from inelastic scattering (20 keY probe) at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron facility [3].

Book Equation of State Measurements in Liquid Deuterium to 70 Gpa

Download or read book Equation of State Measurements in Liquid Deuterium to 70 Gpa written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using intense magnetic pressure, a method was developed to launch flyer plates to velocities in excess of 20 km/s. This technique was used to perform plate-impact, shock wave experiments on cryogenic liquid deuterium (LD2) to examine its high-pressure equation of state (EOS). Using an impedance matching method, Hugoniot measurements were obtained in the pressure range of 30-70 GPa. The results of these experiments disagree with previously reported Hugoniot measurements of LD2 in the pressure range above (almost equal to)40 GPa, but are in good agreement with first principles, ab-initio models for hydrogen and its isotopes.

Book Equations of State for Hydrogen and Deuterium

Download or read book Equations of State for Hydrogen and Deuterium written by Gerald Irwin Kerley and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the complete revision of a deuterium equation of state (EOS) model published in 1972. It uses the same general approach as the 1972 EOS, i.e., the so-called 'chemical model, ' but incorporates a number of theoretical advances that have taken place during the past thirty years. Three phases are included: a molecular solid, an atomic solid, and a fluid phase consisting of both molecular and atomic species. Ionization and the insulator-metal transition are also included. The most important improvements are in the liquid perturbation theory, the treatment of molecular vibrations and rotations, and the ionization equilibrium and mixture models. In addition, new experimental data and theoretical calculations are used to calibrate certain model parameters, notably the zero-Kelvin isotherms for the molecular and atomic solids, and the quantum corrections to the liquid phase. The report gives a general overview of the model, followed by detailed discussions of the most important theoretical issues and extensive comparisons with the many experimental data that have been obtained during the last thirty years. Questions about the validity of the chemical model are also considered. Implications for modeling the 'giant planets' are also discussed.

Book Handbook of Hydrogen Storage

Download or read book Handbook of Hydrogen Storage written by Michael Hirscher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-04-26 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the limited resources of fossil fuels, hydrogen is proposed as an alternative and environment-friendly energy carrier. However, its potential is limited by storage problems, especially for mobile applications. Current technologies, as compressed gas or liquefied hydrogen, comprise severe disadvantages and the storage of hydrogen in lightweight solids could be the solution to this problem. Since the optimal storage mechanism and optimal material have yet to be identified, this first handbook on the topic provides an excellent overview of the most probable candidates, highlighting both their advantages as well as drawbacks. From the contents: ¿ Physisorption ¿ Clathrates ¿ Metal hydrides ¿ Complex hydrides ¿ Amides, imides, and mixtures ¿ Tailoring Reaction Enthalpies ¿ Borazan ¿ Aluminum hydride ¿ Nanoparticles A one-stop reference on all questions concerning hydrogen storage for physical and solid state chemists, materials scientists, chemical engineers, and physicists.

Book Absolute Equation of State Measurements of Shocked Liquid Deuterium Up to 200 GPa 2 Mbar

Download or read book Absolute Equation of State Measurements of Shocked Liquid Deuterium Up to 200 GPa 2 Mbar written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results of the first measurements of density, shock speed and particle speed in compressed liquid deuterium at pressures in excess in 1 Mbar. We have performed equation of state (EOS) measurements on the principal Hugoniot of liquid deuterium from 0.2 to 2 Mbar. We employ high-resolution radiography to simultaneously measure the compression of the sample. We are also attempting to measure the color temperature of the shocked D2. Key to this effort is the development and implementation of interferometric methods in order to carefully characterized the profile and steadiness of the shock and the level of preheat in the samples. These experiments allow us to differentiate between the accepted EOS model for D2 and a new model which included the effects of molecular dissociation on the EOS.

Book Physics of Strongly Coupled Plasma

Download or read book Physics of Strongly Coupled Plasma written by Vladimir Fortov and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-11-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the physics of plasma at high density, which has been compressed so strongly that the effects of interparticle interactions and non-ideality govern its behavior. Interest in this non-traditional plasma has been generated in recent years when states of matter with high concentration of energy became accessible experimentally as the basis of modern technologies and facilities. The greatest part of the matter in the Universe is in this exotic state. In this book, the methods of generation and diagnostics of strongly coupled plasmas are presented, along with the main theoretical methods and experimental results on thermodynamical, kinetic and optical properties. Particular attention is given to fast developing modern directions of strongly coupled plasma physics such as metallization of dielectrics and dielectrization of metals, non-neutral plasmas, dusty plasmas and their crystallization. The book is written for physicists and astrophysicists, engineers, and material scientists.
