James' decision is not based on greed or a directive from his parents, but on his desire to help his family financially, after learning that his older brother is to attend medical school in Philadelphia to become a doctor. Along the turbulent path of his life, James soon discovers that a special bond has formed with one of his seven children, his daughter, Catherine. Catherine faces her own obstacles growing up in the impoverished, idiosyncratic patch town of Shepsberg. The experiences of both James and Catherine are entwined on many levels as they learn the most essential lessons in life from one another. Days later, the riders' bodies are found, and though no one can say for certain what happened in their final hours, their remains prove that whatever it was must have been brutal. Rowan's village was once a tranquil place, but now things have changed. Something has followed the path those riders made and has come down from the hills, through the forest, and into the village. Beast or man, it has brought death to Rowan's door once again. Only this time, its appetite is insatiable. Book America s Secret War against Bolshevism

Download or read book America s Secret War against Bolshevism written by David S. Foglesong and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Russian revolutions of 1917 to the end of the Civil War in 1920, Woodrow Wilson's administration sought to oppose the Bolsheviks in a variety of covert ways. Drawing on previously unavailable American and Russian archival material, David Foglesong chronicles both sides of this secret war and reveals a new dimension to the first years of the U.S.-Soviet rivalry. Foglesong explores the evolution of Wilson's ambivalent attitudes toward socialism and revolution before 1917 and analyzes the social and cultural origins of American anti-Bolshevism. Constrained by his espousal of the principle of self-determination, by idealistic public sentiment, and by congressional restrictions, Wilson had to rely on secretive methods to affect the course of the Russian Civil War. The administration provided covert financial and military aid to anti-Bolshevik forces, established clandestine spy networks, concealed the purposes of limited military expeditions to northern Russia and Siberia, and delivered ostensibly humanitarian assistance to soldiers fighting to overthrow the Soviet government. In turn, the Soviets developed and secretly funded a propaganda campaign in the United States designed to mobilize public opposition to anti-Bolshevik activity, promote American-Soviet economic ties, and win diplomatic recognition from Washington.

Download or read book Seeing Reds written by Charles H. McCormick and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, fear that a network of German spies was operating on American soil justified the rapid growth of federal intelligence agencies. When that threat proved illusory, these agencies, staffed heavily by corporate managers and anti-union private detectives, targeted antiwar and radical labor groups, particularly the Socialist party and the Industrial Workers of the World.Seeing Reds, based largely on case files from the Bureau of Investigation, Military Intelligence Division, and Office of Naval Intelligence, describes this formative period of federal domestic spying in the Pittsburgh region. McCormick traces the activities of L. M. Wendell, a Bureau of Investigation "special employee" who infiltrated the IWW's Pittsburgh recruiting branch and the inner circle of anarchist agitator and lawyer Jacob Margolis. Wendell and other Pittsbugh based agents spied on radical organizations from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Camp Lee, Virginia, intervened in the steel and coal strikes of 1919, and carried out the Palmer raids aimed at mass deportation of members of the Union of Russian Workers and the New Communist Party.McCormick's detailed history uses extensive research to add to our understanding of the security state, cold war ideology, labor and immigration history, and the rise of the authoritarian American Left, as well as the career paths of figures as diverse as J. Edgar Hoover and William Z. Foster.

Book Devouring Freedom

Download or read book Devouring Freedom written by W. James Antle and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government keeps growing, while our freedoms—and pocketbooks—keep shrinking. As America faces another four years of radical government expansion, columnist James Antle asks in Devouring Freedom, “Can big government ever be stopped?” It’s a problem that’s been fed from both sides of the aisle as politicians for generations have tried to buy their own job security with hand-outs and programs, platitudes and government-subsidized loans. James Antle examines the addition both parties have to bigger spending, bigger government programs, bigger intrusion into our lives and bigger dependency on the nanny state, as he examines how an ever-expanding government inevitably leads to less prosperity, less independence, less ingenuity, less growth, and far less liberty. Devouring Freedom is the book for anyone who believes that Obama’s second term is just the latest installment in the long obituary for American liberty. And it’s the book for anyone who’s ever asked, “Is it too late to turn the ship around?”
