Book Guy de Maupassant

Download or read book Guy de Maupassant written by Christopher Lloyd and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most celebrated French storyteller of the nineteenth century, Guy de Maupassant was a master of the modern short story. Offering an intriguing picture of French life, his stories derive their enduring appeal from understated artistry, extreme craftsmanship, and the universality of his characters and their aspirations and misfortunes. His career as a professional writer lasted only twelve years before it was brutally cut short by the dreadful consequences of untreatable syphilis: chronic sickness, a failed suicide attempt, insanity, paralysis, and death after eighteen months’ confinement in a clinic. In this insightful and compelling biography, the only one in English currently available, Christopher Lloyd situates Maupassant’s life and work in the literary and social context of nineteenth-century France. He skillfully introduces the reader to Maupassant’s most famous works, such as Boule de suif, Bel-Ami, and Pierre et Jean, as well as highlights the important stages and achievements of his life and legacy.

Book L Assommoir

  • Author : Émile Zola

  • ISBN : 0192593226
  • Pages : 528 pages

Download or read book L Assommoir written by Émile Zola and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh novel in the Rougon-Macquart cycle, L'Assommoir (1877) is the story of a woman's struggle for happiness in working-class Paris. It was a contemporary bestseller, outraged conservative critics, and launched a passionate debate about the legitimate scope of modern literature. At the centre of the novel stands Gervaise, who starts her own laundry and for a time makes a success of it. But her husband Coupeau squanders her earnings in the Assommoir, the local drinking shop, and gradually the pair sink into poverty and squalor. L'Assommoir is the most finely crafted of Zola's novels, and this new translation captures not only the brutality but also the pathos of its characters' lives. This book is a pwerful indictment of nineteenth-century social conditions, and the introduction examines its relation to politics and art as well as its explosive effect on the literary scene. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book A further selection of the Chroniques of Guy de Maupassant

Download or read book A further selection of the Chroniques of Guy de Maupassant written by Guy de Maupassant and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second selection of Maupassant's chroniques, edited in their original French version, includes articles on a wide range of subjects. Many are on literary, artistic or social themes, some are inspired by political events of the day. In general, some of the lighter pieces have been chosen, but in all of them Maupassant has something important to say. Maupassant often uses his chroniques to rehearse themes and topics to be developed later in short stories or novels. It is true that he never sought to re-publish them after their initial appearance in Le Gaulois, Gil Blas, or Le Figaro, but this is not to say that he did not reveal much about his inner self in these writings. Though he sometimes referred to them disparagingly as an irksome weekly obligation, he continued to offer his chroniques to the Parisian dailies when fame and fortune ensured that he had little need of the extra income they brought in. He wrote almost as many chroniques as short stories - indeed the distinction between the two genres is not always clear - and, whether the tone is facetious, serious or ironic, one can sense that Maupassant enjoys this dialogue with a regular readership. Readers or critics who ignore the journalism deprive themselves of a significant part of his overall output. This second selection shows once again that Maupassant the short-story writer and novelist was also an entertaining and observant chronicler of events in the France of his day.

Book excerpt: 'His rise testifies to the decline of a whole society.' Jean-Paul Sartre Maupassant's second novel, Bel-Ami (1885) is the story of a ruthlessly ambitious young man (Georges Duroy, christened 'Bel-Ami' by his female admirers) making it to the top in fin-de-siècle Paris. It is a novel about money, sex, and power, set against the background of the politics of the French colonization of North Africa. It explores the dynamics of an urban society uncomfortably close to our own and is a devastating satire of the sleaziness of contemporary journalism. Bel-Ami enjoys the status of an authentic record of the apotheosis of bourgeois capitalism under the Third Republic. But the creative tension between its analysis of modern behaviour and its identifiably late nineteenth-century fabric is one of the reasons why Bel-Ami remains one of the finest French novels of its time, as well as being recognized as Maupassant's greatest achievement as a novelist. Book A Gustave Flaubert Encyclopedia

Download or read book A Gustave Flaubert Encyclopedia written by Laurence M. Porter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-03-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustave Flaubert is probably the most famous novelist of nineteenth-century France, and his best known work, Madame Bovary, is read in numerous comparative literature and French courses. His fiction set the standard to which other authors turned to learn their craft, and his cult of art and his unrelenting search for stylistic perfection inspired many later writers, such as Maupassant, Proust, Conrad, Faulkner, and Joyce. His denunciation of materialistic, corrupt society; his fascination with altered states of consciousness; his oscillation between metaphysical longings and a radical nihilism; and his deep-seated mistrust of the adequacy of words themselves anticipate the works of contemporary authors. This reference is a convenient guide to his life and writings. Included in this volume are several hundred alphabetically arranged entries on Flaubert's individual works and major characters; historical persons and events that shaped his life; the themes that run throughout his writings; the critical approaches employed by scholars studying his works; and related topics of interest. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and most close with a brief bibliography. All of his major works are treated at length, and the volume mentions nearly every unpublished project of his that has a title. The book concludes with a selected, general bibliography of major studies.

Book Maupassant s Fiction and the Darwinian View of Life

Download or read book Maupassant s Fiction and the Darwinian View of Life written by Laurence A. Gregorio and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naturalists wrote from a «scientific» point of view, and no science had more currency in society in the late nineteenth century than Darwin's theory of evolution. Until now, this motif in Guy de Maupassant has escaped critical attention. Maupassant's Fiction and the Darwinian View of Life examines evolutionary theory in the literature in a way accessible to students of literature and science alike. It first explains the theoretical basis and Maupassant's affinity for it, then studies one short story, «La Ficelle», in its entirety, proposing a new and interesting interpretation based on evidence read through a Darwinian lens. The remaining chapters organize a lively Darwinian reading of Maupassant according to topics such as natural selection, heredity, and materialism. The book shows that Darwinism and the economic variety of Social Darwinism figure significantly in Maupassant's fiction. It is a must for students and teachers of Naturalism and Darwinism across the liberal arts.

Download or read book Pierre et Jean written by Guy de Maupassant and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Monsieur de Maupassant has never before been so clever.' Henry James Henry James's admiration for 'this masterly little novel' has been echoed throughout the twentieth century by readers of Pierre et Jean. It marked a turning-point in the development of French fiction, situated as it is between traditional social realism and the psychological novel. It is recognized as a classic study of filial jealousy, triggered by one of the two brothers of its title finding himself the sole inheritor of the fortune of his mother's former lover. Pierre et Jean is set in Le Havre in the 1880s and is notable for its evocation of the Normandy coastline captured by the Impressionists. But Maupassant's achievement is to have woven from this simple plot in a maritime context a brilliantly crafted exploration of the complexities at the heart of family life.

Book Surfacing the Politics of Desire

Download or read book Surfacing the Politics of Desire written by Rajeshwari S. Vallury and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-08-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A particular model of masculine desire has traditionally been evoked in an effort to understand the subordinate role of women in male-authored fiction. Because of this, the belief that male-authored texts are unfailingly built upon the denial of feminine difference has come to dominate many aspects of literary studies. "Surfacing" the Politics of Desire re-examines the "myths" of masculine desire in order to challenge this premise, placing literature at the centre of recent feminist debates over the ontology and politics of sexual difference. Citing examples of textual resistance to analytical feminist thought, Rajeshwari S. Vallury argues that literature is expressive of desires that are not always configured in terms of oppression or the denial of difference. In other words, a particular politics of reading obscures the multiplicity of desire that literature is capable of affirming and risks sacrificing the possibilities of both literature and desire. Through a re-evaluation of the sexual politics practiced by nineteenth-century male writers such as Balzac, Gautier, and Maupassant, Vallury moves towards a reconfiguration of the relationship between aesthetics and politics. "Surfacing" the Politics of Desire calls into question dominant feminist approaches to the literary representation of gender. Enlisting the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, Vallury calls for a different method of reading, one based on a deeper understanding of the politics of literature.

Book Short Stories Knowledge and the Supernatural

Download or read book Short Stories Knowledge and the Supernatural written by Amândio Reis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a comparative approach to the supernatural short stories of Machado de Assis, Henry James and Guy de Maupassant. It offers an alternative to predominantly novel-centric and Anglo-centric perspectives on literary pre-modernism by investigating a transnational and multilingual connection between genre, theme and theory, i.e., between the modern short story, the supernatural and the problem of knowledge. Incorporating a close analysis of the literary texts into a discussion of their historical context, the book argues that Machado, James and Maupassant explore and reinvent the supernatural short story as a metafictional genre. This modernized and innovative form allows them to challenge the dichotomies and conventions of realist and supernatural fiction, inviting their past and present readers to question common assumptions on reality and literary representation.

Book Medical Examinations

Download or read book Medical Examinations written by Mary Donaldson-Evans and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the crude battlefield surgery of Revolutionary times to the birth of modern clinical medicine, the nineteenth century witnessed impressive developments in the medical sciences and a concomitant growth in the prestige of the medical practitioner. In France this phenomenon had important implications for literature as writers scrambled to give legitimacy to their enterprise by allying themselves with science. Overflowing its traditional banks, medical discourse inundated the field of French literature, particularly in the realist and naturalist movements. The literati's enthrallment with medicine and their subservient adoption of a medical model in the creation of their plots and characters have not previously been seriously questioned. In Medical Examinations, Mary Donaldson-Evans corrects this oversight. Exploring six novels and two short stories published during the Second Empire and the early Third Republic, she argues that there was a growing resistance to medicine's linguistic and professional hegemony, a resistance fraught with ideological implications. Tainted by a subtle?and sometimes not so subtle?anti-Semitism, some of the fiction of this period adopts counterdiscursive strategies to tar the physician with his own brush. Featured authors include Gustave Flaubert, Edmond and Jules Goncourt, Emile Zola, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Guy de Maupassant, and Alphonse and Läon Daudet.
