Book excerpt: The capacity of containment areas is influenced by many factors that include: (a) variations in material being dredged; (b) type of dredge; (c) volume change on handling the dredged material while dredging and during deposition; (d) flow velocities of the dredged slurry in the area; (e) elimination of carrying water by runoff through weirs; (f) solids in the effluent; (g) soil permeabilities; (h) flow patterns and seepage through dikes; (i) primary consolidation; and (j) secondary compression effects. Current methods for estimating the capacity of containment areas for placement of dredged material often rely on empirical factors and local experience. From an investigation of various methods for sizing containment areas, suggestions are made for estimating containment area capacity based on consolidation of the dredged material and foundation soils.

Book excerpt: Each year in the United States, large volumes of material are dredged out of lakes and waterways and are dumped in confined disposal facilities so that they can consolidate. A mathematical model is proposed to predict the settling of the dredged material by predicting the "primary" self-weight consolidation curve of silt particles under zone settling conditions. Using a relatively "pure" specimen of silt, self-weight consolidation tests were performed at concentrations ranging from 10 to 200 grams per liter. To generate the predicted curve, the model requires the location of the zone interface at 180, 600, and 720 seconds and the assumed A-value. The A-value is used to "fine-tune" the predicted curve so that it will fit the experimental curve. When values of "A" from 0.85 to 0.95 are used, the predicted curve will fit the experimental curve for all concentrations considered. Thus, to predict the "primary" self-weight consolidation of the dredged material, a sedimentation test using a sample of the dredged material must first be performed.

Book excerpt: This report documents the development of a mathematical model of the consolidation/desiccation process in soft, fine-grained soils such as dredged material; provides for computer solution of the model; and verifies the solution through comparisons with field measurements. The consolidation process is modeled through the previously documented finite strain theory of consolidation which accounts for the large strains and nonlinear soil properties inherent in the very soft materials commonly found in maintenance dredgings. Pertinent equations necessary for process calculation are given. The mathematical model is next rewritten for computer solution through the computer program PCDDF. The model and computer solution are then tested through comparisons of predicted material settlements with measured settlements in three confined disposal areas. Appendices to the report include a detailed user's manual (Appendix A) for computer program PCDDF along with a program listing (Appendix B) and sample input and output data (Appendix C). Consolidation properties (Appendix D) and the design of a comprehensive field verification site (Appendix E) are also included.
