Book excerpt: Excerpt from Material for a Genealogy of the Scammon Family in Maine In the preparation of this paper the writer has had access to very few family records, being unable to learn of any old ones in existence; and the very little there is in print, is unreliable the only exception being Folsom's "Saco and Biddeford." The sources of information being mainly church and town records in York County, Maine wills and York deeds. The church clerk conscientiously trying to earn his salary can sometimes double discount "Little Buttercup" in the mixing up of children, while the town clerk does not always prove a bad second; there is, however, much to be learned by the comparison of these records aided by the gruesome light of the old gravestones, not always honest even in their dates; this sifting of evidence has its charms and while all of the dates given here may not be exact, the record of the descent of the families will be found accurate although not always complete. Should this fall into the hands of anyone who has the means of correcting or completing any thing here set down the writer would be glad of correspondence on the subject.
